Get the answer IN WRITING from the NCAA and you won't have a problem!
So it is forbidden without approval in writing?

Great advice from TR and Beenthere.
I believe the answer will lie in whether or not that summer team has any connection whatsoever (real or imagined) to your son's college. But you still need to check it out with the NCAA.

I would not take a cent to coach unless I had an official dated and signed letter in my pocket from the NCAA and the other copies would be sent to my College, High School and anybody else on a need to know basis.
Our summer team has paid college players. First we called their university athletic dept and got approval from the Compliance Officer, so that everything was up front and approved in writing to protect the player.
