I have a question about this. I have a friend who has two sons in college - junior and freshman - both playing baseball for the same college. Last season, their HC was fired. All players were told they had the option of leaving and going elsewhere to play without penalty, pursuant to NCAA rule. In fact, I know one other player who would have been a freshman there after having signed and NLI that DID leave and go to another college to play baseball, no penalty and is now playing at that second school this year.

Now, those are the facts, I just don't know the specific NCAA rule that goes with it.

Can someone help on this one?
From the NCAA's point of view, changing the coaching staff does not justify a transfer, and in some cases there will be a penalty. Here are some situations to consider:

  • Incoming freshman who has signed a LOI: Until the player enrolls and attends a class, the player is not yet a student, and isn't subject to transfer rules. He is however subject to LOI rules, but the school may decide to provide him with a release from the LOI. If not, and he attends a different D1/D2 school, he'll have to sit out a year, and suffer a fiancial aid penalty.
  • D2 player who hasn't previously transferred from a 4 year school: He can transfer without penalty. Possibly some conference rule would affect him, if it is a intra-conference transfer.
  • D1 player who transferred before August 1, 2008: He could transfer without penalty under the one-time exception.
  • D1 player today: He has to sit out one year. The schools cannot waive this penalty.
