Just want to know what players and/or former players think of NCTC in Gainesville, TX and Temple College in Temple, TX...the baseball programs, the head coaches, the academics, the whole thing. Would appreciate any positive or negative comments. (I'm new to this...hope I am doing it right!) Thanks!

I know both of these programs very well. NCTC has been a traditional power in the Region V setting for the past 10 years. Very nice facility and visibility. Coach Harp is an excellent recruiter who took over as Head Coach last year after a number of years as Assistant. Had a tough first year as head coach but look for them to bounce back. Have had many players drafted and move on to quality 4-year programs.

Temple has an outstanding coach in Craig MacMurtry. Former big-league pitcher who does a very good job in a very low-key way. Program has grown in stature EACH year and finished second in the Region V tournament last year to eventual National Champion New Mexico JC. Ballpark is nice ( very large and plays large as the wind blows in a bunch ) and school is pretty. He has had a number of players move on to the next level and is ALMOST to the level of national recognition on a larger scale.

Both places are very good and I could recommend either / or to you with no reservation. Really would come down to which one was a better "fit" for what your son is looking for and what the college's needs are.
Can comment on Temple from the standpoint that my son recently worked out with the team as well as attended one of their camps. He said he felt very comfortable with the players, liked the field and his comment on Coach McMurtrey was that he would "play for that guy any time". The only drawback son saw was that they were pretty deep in his position and is really hoping the roster opens up. As for the academic side, check the school's website to see if the program your son is interested in is offered. Temple is a fairly diverse city with enough to do and Austin is about an hour away.

A friend of ours plays at Temple JC. He was injured and had to redshirt, which he thought would end his time there. Coach McMurty made it clear to the player that as long as he was continuing his rehab and working on his classes, his scholly and place on the team was secure. I find that to be very refreshing considering how often I hear about scholarships being pulled when a player gets injured.
