As I have posted earlier, my Son is looking to transfer to either another D1 or to a D2.

Would love to hear from other Parents or Players who have done so.

After he gets his "permission to contact" release, we will reach out to schools that he has interest in or that might have interest in him.

Questions:

1. I realize that he will need to sit a year if he goes to another D1. Any chance of a scholarship in this situation? As I understand it, he can't be on scholarship during his "sit" year, but would a school offer something for the following years, even on a contingency basis? Like, if he makes the team, or if he's a starter, etc?

2. Obviously a D2 can offer a scholarship right away if they have money left. Does he go to the school and try out? How does this usually work? Any idea what to expect?

He starts his Summer League the first week of June, so hopefully some schools can see him then, but that doesn't leave much time to make a decision, enroll in the new school, etc.

Thanks in advance for any help!

The NCAA rules allow a D1 to provide him with a a scholarship during the sit year:
14.5.5.1.1 Attendance for One Academic Year. A transfer student from a four-year institution who
attended a four-year institution at least one academic year shall be eligible for financial aid (see Bylaw
14.5.5.4) and practice at a member institution under the rules of the institution and the conference of
which the institution is a member, regardless of the student’s qualification status (per Bylaw 14.3.1.1) at
the time of initial enrollment.

I suspect that there is no actual prospect of "earning" a scholarship subsequent to enrolling at a D1. He has minimal leverage, because if no scholarship is offered, what would he do? Transfer again, sit another year, and then have one year of eligibility left? A coach can reasonably expect that he won't transfer a second time, and so spending scholarship money wouldn't seem necessary.

So his best (pretty much only) leverage at a D1 would be to negotiate a scholarship now. Having said that, I suspect that a player looking to transfer from one D1 to another D1 because he isn't getting playing time isn't likely to get a scholarship offer.
I asked the question as I was assuming that the player is on scholarship.

If lack of playing time is the reason, one might take into consideration what 3FG has posted.

I am not sure if I were a coach that I would award a scholarship to an incoming junior this fall unless he's proved himself as an impact player or proved he can be one asap.

Again I don't know all of the circumstances, why make a change if college is getting paid for?
Redwing,

If your son is transferring after his freshman year, he can go to a JUCO and tryout for their baseball team and play 1 year as a sophomore. This way he won't have to sit out a year.

I've seen lots of college and MLB scouts show up at JUCOs to watch good players and it's not uncommon for another D1 offer as long as the player has enough credits to graduate from JUCO after sophomore year.

Wishing your son good luck with his decision ~
I didn't remember (my bad) that it was posted a month ago so thanks.

I'd stick with the 40% scholarship and work my butt off to win a spot over another player my junior and senior year.

There is no guarantee that a transfer will mean more playing time either at a D1 or at a D2 or a scholarship.

Sometimes we just have to accept things for what they are, and that is that the grass is not always greener someplace else.

The whole object is to obtain a scholarship to help pay for college and in this case baseball is helping. If the coach withdraws his scholarship that may be a whole different issue.

Good luck.
