Man on 1st no outs. Groundball to pitcher, pitcher throws to first for the out. The runner who was on first, rounds second and heads to third. As the 1st baseman throws to third (bad throw), the umpire behind shortstop, makes a bonehead decision to throw a returned foul ball to the umpire at home plate. Is it an automatic dead ball, or is it a judgement call on if the 2 balls rolling in different direction affectived the play??

Sounds to me like 2 HS kids or inexperienced umpires on a 60 ft kid game....who got surprised when the alert runner tried for third...

For the life of me I cant imagine who was going to make the call at third....BU behind F6 and the HPU at home.....

Mike is right here, they will have to remedy their mess... the rule book doesnt fix inexperience or inattention....

the reason I was wondering, there was a game at Yankee stadium that a fan ran onto the field while a ball was being pitched. It was a fly ball to the 3rd baseman and game was supposed to be over. Umpire ruled dead ball, next pitch, Yankees Win!!

These are two totally different scenarios. In the initial post it is pretty obvious it is youth league baseball and since it wasn't affecting the play there is more judgement on the call.

In this reply it is MLB and a fan on the field is a safety and security risk so dead ball call is correct. Additionally after tackling the loser, or tasing him if it is Philly, he gets a stay in the ballpark holding cell until he can go directly to jail for the night.
