Son 09 attended a showcase this weekend and performed very well (like he had a guardian angel on his shoulder) in front of the host head coach D1 and an assistant of another school D3 that he likes. After we returned home he sent both coaches an email thanking them for the opportunity to participate and that he enjoyed the showcase experience.
Question that I have is this. Since he is an 09, how soon should we make it known to these coaches that he is very interested in their program (other than attending their camps)?
As a background, son has a 4.0+ GPA and wants to eventually go to dental school. He plays ball because he enjoys it, but knows that baseball after college is a longshot.
Any help is appreciated, as we don't know what to expect from the schools.
Thanks.

RRM57, now is the perfect time!

My '08 son just committed to a school he's been in touch with since sophomore year. In October of his junior year, he went on an unofficial visit to this school to meet with the coaches and express his interest. The recruiting coordinator commented to him at that time, "You are really smart to be starting so early."

Your son was wise to send follow-up emails. Good job! Make sure he keeps these coaches in the loop with occasional emails, handwritten notes, etc. He can send them his playing schedule, update them on stats, and mention any honors he receives. January might be a good time to send them his athletic resume. College coaches seem to have a little more down time then.

Best wishes!
Infield08,
Thanks for the feedback. I didn't know if we should push the info or not. He will be going to the D1 for a campus visit in Feb 08, so we planned on contacting either the head coach or top assistant before we visit, hopefully to see a practice and how it is run, etc.
As for the D3, we also plan on a college visit in the spring and basically do the same contact with the baseball staff.
One other question, son will be going to another showcase at another local D3 (3rd college choice) in a couple of weeks, should we notify these other coaches that he will be there?
Note son is basing college choices on size of college, academics, and possibility of playing baseball.
Your plan for campus visits this coming spring sounds great!

Go ahead and let the other coaches know of your son's upcoming showcase at the D3. I don't know if they'll attend or not, but at least they will be aware of his interest in their programs. (Note: it's best for your son to do all the emailing and calling. Mom or Dad can always provide some assistance with the wording. Wink )
