Hello again everyone. My 16U son was asked to be a guest player to participate in the WWBA 18U National Championships in Atlanta in July. Does anyone have any details about this tournament, is it worth the time, is it a good tournament and would it be beneficial for him this summer as he is going into his junior year next year in HS? You guys helped the last time I asked Smile. Thanks again to those that know about this tournament from the past.

rosin bag- If it is within economic reasoning for you and your family, I would highly recommend attending the WWBA events at East Cobb. They usually bring about a lot of exposure and quality competition. The fields are beautiful and the area is very nice. One negative about the event is that there is potentially some traveling involved being that there are some field locations that are not close to the central complex at East Cobb. But overall, a very quality tournament and IMO, the second best tournament style event put on by Perfect Game in terms of competition and exposure (the October WWBA event in Jupiter to me is #1).

However, if I recall correctly in the past, the 17u East Cobb event attracted more collegiate attention than the 18u (for obvious age reasons).

I played in the 18u when I was 16 and loved it, and if I had another chance, and was financially capable of swinging another trip to Georgia, would certainly attend again.
My son played in 15u, 16u, and 17u WWBA in Atlanta last year. There were many scouts at the 16u and 17u. He will be playing in 16u and 17u again this year. We understand that there are not too many scouts at the 18u. Overall a great experience! By all means let any school you are interested know when your son is at the WWBA as the schools that do have scouts there must plan their time very carefully in order to see the players they are interested in seeing. If he is are a pitcher you will have to stay in contact while you are there and advise them of his pitching schedule. Good luck!
While there's no need to promote these tournaments (they're full every year with many on a waiting list) I don't understand where the rumors involving (not many scouts) at the 18U come from. That is a highly scouted event. In fact, here are the WWBA tournaments (in order) that draw the most scouts and college coaches.

1. WWBA World Championship in October (Jupiter, FL)
2. WWBA 17U Championship in July (Georgia)
3. WWBA 18U Championship in July (Georgia)
4. WWBA 16U Championship in July (Georgia)

The above are the most highly scouted events involving Travel Teams. While nothing can compare to the first two events, the WWBA 18U is the third most scouted tournament in the nation every year. It's also extremely competitive.

There is way too many talented 16 and 17 year olds playing in that 18U. Then there are a large number of unsigned draft picks and college committed players. These are things that draw lots of scouts and college coaches. It was while playing in the middle of this tournament in 2002 when Zach Greinke signed with the Royals for $2.5 million.

Anyway please, if interested, go to the link below and check out the number of draft picks and MLB players who have played in the 18U. Maybe it will gave a clue as to why it has been so heavily scouted.

You will need to scroll down for quite awhile to see it all.

WWBA 18U Championship
calisportsfan,

We don't usually list the colleges that attend. Colleges do not have to register so we don't know for sure who is there. There are a very large number of the top college programs that do attend.

I think you are talking about the AZ Fall Classic rather than the PG tournament held in AZ?

The differences are...

The WWBA in Georgia draws more colleges and pro scouts than any event next to the WWBA in October held in Jupiter.

The WWBA tournaments are very competitive with the teams major goal to win the tournament. Most teams really want to win games. The exposure is kind of a secondary thing in a way.

A long time ago coaches and scouts told us they need to see kids at workouts and showcases. It's the best way to evaluate tools.

But they also said they really need to see them "play for keeps" against the best competition.

When they see both of the above, they have a very good feel for the player. One without the other is kind of incomplete.
The overall experiences from playing in all the WWBA's for my son and with my son are lifetime memories that will not be soon forgotten.

If you're a baseball fan, you will have to literally pinch yourself cause you'll feel as though you landed in the smack middle of baseball heaven.

I must warn you though, it's hotter than a fire cracker here in Georgia and even harder to predict are those mean old toad-strangler rain storms that show up and go crazily insane. Talk about wreaking havoc. Don't go in the ball complexes WITHOUT an umbrella at any time. Just a hint.

Oh...and one more thing. While the fields AT the East Cobb complex have covered stadium-like seats please know one important, VERY important thing. They are NOT 100% sun-screened. You WILL get burned while sitting under them if you stay for a while. So put on sunscreen even if you're sitting under them. How do I know? Trust me, it was a hard lesson to learn. LOL
