My son is a red shirt sophomore who was just released from a major D1 (one of the nation's top programs)after being the victim of a log jam at his positon. He received a scholarship from his school, and has the tools (legit 6.5 or below 60; 4.0-4.1 to 1st from the right side, throws 90+, great glove, hits for average and power. Numerous awards, honors, high ratings from scouting services, etc.) Not to knock the other guys who remain, as at this school they all are equally good, but he has top-level talent.

Unfortunately, he had already used his one time tranfer when this school first signed him, so now he is in a pickle since unless he is out of his current school (and maybe in a new school that needs him) by January, he will have to sit out next year.

Does anyone here know what rules apply? Or if he can go to a JUCO even though he is in his junior year in college (rs first year, so this is his soph year of athletic eligibility), then transfer to a 4 year school later?

Anyone know a JUCO or NAIA school (preferably back home in Fla) that needs someone of his caliber? The nationally-renowned Coach of his current school will vouch for his character and skills.

Thanks for any help and advice you can give.

Thanks Tiger Paw Mom.

I had noticed that some schools have 45+ for Fall Ball, and that did not happen here. They do not traditionally do this, but there was a log jam at my son's position due to several unexpected events. It was just an unfortunate situaton, at a great program, but for us right now the bottom line is things didn't work out for my son.

The Coach is willing and eager to help, we are just trying to get a handle on what to ask him to help us accomplish: JUCO or 4-year, with JUCO allowing him to play immediately (if it is possible) and 4-year obliging him to sit out this season.

And, of course, this is not exactly a good time to get in touch with coaches to find out their needs, especially if it's their needs for 2007-08 we're asking about at the 4-year schools.
I am not sure of the particulars, but doesn't make sense to go JUCO, then transfer again, that's four transfers in 4 years. Your son is losing valuable time toward his degree and has to be loosing credits? That is really what the college experience is about.
Was the log jam that bad that it required another move? Was your son not willing to play behind another or possibly play another position. When good coaches don't recruit well and things get jammed up, they move their players around, especially is they are as good as you say your son is.
I think you need to sit down and figure out what needs to be accomplished. Define some goals instead of looking for quick solutions. Sounds like your son is not happy wherever he goes, due to not playing baseball, not school, not the school experience, not relationships he has developed.
That's just my opinion, I would personally be leary of recommending someone in your situation, because the grass is not necessarily greener on the other side.
Was your player drafted out of HS?

I only ask because a very good friend of mine, the father of a Premier player who has a D1 grant to be the starting 2008 SS told his Dad yesterday that all he wants to do is play baseball.

He doesn't want to go to school right now.

This kid is very good, a throwback type player, who feels his time is now.

College isn't for everyone.

I don't want to be negative but you described your son as a 5 tool player . There are only so many 5 tool players around and the the ones i know are the # 1 Pick in the draft ( or the top 10 ). So my question is . If your son is that player , it is his job to lose or you need to reevaluate your sons ability . Because no school is going to release a player with that ability , unless something happened at school. Please don't take this as a bashing , it's not meant to be . Good luck ! Hope it works out for your son !
RipEm,
It seems that you have two major areas you are trying to figure out since your son was already released:
One: Is it possible for your son to transfer to a JUCO?
Two: Since January seems to be the magic cut-off date, is there a school that could use him?

For number two, in addition to getting help from your coach, I would contact the other colleges that recruited your son out of high school and let them know your son was released.
For Number one: I would go right to the coaches of the JUCO and let them know your situation. They will let you know if your son can “legally” transfer. Also, they will give you an indication if there is a fit for your son on their team.

It seems that baseball is still important to your son. From what I read, he is not ready to drop baseball and stay at his current University to finish his degree. As far as going to school to get a degree as being a reason that baseball players go to college, I do not think that is always the case. If your son and you as parents are happy with the fragmented progress that your son is obtaining, then that is OK. If your son does not make it in Baseball and ends up getting a degree in five or six years, that is OK.
I was in the Air Force for seven years before I completed my degree. I was just as satisfied with that accomplishment as my friends who received theirs in four years.

Good luck
