You see other coaches on other teams.

I am 14 and have played on a competitive travel baseball team for 4 years. Of course you always are going to win, but in my eyes as much as i want to win the tournament or beat this team or that team, i am trying to improve my skills BY MYSELF to do well in high school. I am fortunate to have great coaches, one being my father, who don't start yelling or ragging on me when i make a CRITICAL error (which has happened quite alot this year). I saw a team that is a good team but there starting SS made an error and the runner ended up scoring and his own dad, and other coaches started yelling, "Thats on you!!". when i heard this it made me realize what great coaches i have. Of course once and awhile my father might yell once or twice, but that is all for the good that i will listen so i dont do watever i did, again. All i kno is that these kinds of coaches IMO are hard to come by and i am really forunate to have them.

In his book on hitting, "The Mike Schmit Study," Mike suggests that if a coach can't say something to a player with a smile on his face, he should wait until he can. I agree wholeheartedly.

When a player messes up, he already knows it, he doesn't need to have his face publicly rubbed in it. The coaches job is simply to tell him what he can do better to avoid making that mistake again as much as possible.

I have seen good young players with a lot of potential quit playing because they weren't having fun due to verbal abuse from a dad or from a coach.

Its a game. It should be fun.
