With Bellarmine of San Jose and Torrey Pines of San Diego both competing in two of the toughest leagues in the nation, you can expect the unexpected to take place at any time.
It did for Bellarmine on Friday and it didn't for Torrey Pines, so there will likely be a new No. 1 atop the state baseball rankings next week.
At Moscone Field in San Francisco, the Bells, who moved up to No. 1 just last week due to a big win over San Mateo Serra combined with a loss by previous No. 1 Capistrano Valley of Mission Viejo, were upset by fellow West Catholic Athletic League member Sacred Heart Cathedral, 6-5.
SHC, which came into the game with just two previous WCAL victories, came up with a four-run rally in the sixth inning and held on for the shocking win. The big hit of the inning was a two-run double by Chris Batelli.
Bellarmine's loss dropped the team's overall record to 27-3, which is still impressive but the Bells fell out of first-place in the WCAL because Serra completed a two-game sweep of state-ranked Valley Christian of San Jose with a 6-0 win. Serra, which has split with the Bells in two league meetings this year, is now 18-2 overall, 10-1 in league. Bellarmine dropped to 11-2 in league.
Torrey Pines, meanwhile, took on Poway, which was No. 9 in the San Diego Union-Tribune's rankings, in a Palomar League game and came through for a 6-4 triumph. Torrey Pines has been No. 1 in San Diego for several weeks and last week moved up to No. 2 in the state behind Bellarmine.
Walker Moore was the key player of the game for the Falcons. He usually comes in later in games as a close-out reliever and set down Poway in order in the top of the sixth inning with his team leading 4-3. In the bottom of the inning, Moore then connected for a two-run homer to increase the lead to 6-3. He gave a solo homer in the top of the seventh, but that was it and Torrey has its victory.
With the win, Eric Hillenbrand moves to 7-1 and the Falcons improved their overall mark to 21-3, 9-1 in the Palomar League. This is the same league that is home to perennial state and national power Rancho Bernardo, which is struggling this season.
"Honestly, I think my favorite thing about this club is that they don't get down," Falcons' coach Matt Chess told the Union-Tribune. "(Poway) is our rival. They had every motivation to come after us and they played a great game. None of our guys really had their best stuff on the hill, but fortunately we got some timely hitting."
