My son, a pitcher, signed with NMJC last year and he transfered after one semester at NMJC.
Did not transfer because he was yelled at, because he was.........as was every other pitcher on the squad, but because the coaches advised he would see minimal innings, they wanted to redshirt him. Son wanted to play this year vs. sit out a year. Coach understood, and helped him find another school where he would get an opportunity to play. Not all coaches will do that.
If a player can't take some yelling do not go to NMJC. It is tough!! However if you are conference starter you will probably get drafted. That is the allure of NMJC. Look at there website and you can see the track record.
Coaches like power pitchers. If you are not a 90+ arm it will be tough to get on the field. Wind blows out, ALLOT and you must be a ground ball pitcher as well as a strike out pitcher. If ball is up it is a homerun.
NMJC is not for everybody. You will get yelled at, practices are long, 20 inning intersquads, you will learn a second language, dorm life is not home life, not much to do in Hobbs, 20-25 pitchers will be there in the fall and all can pitch.
BUT...........if you are a conference starter you will have every opportunity to get exposed to the MLB as Coach Birmingham is very well connected in the professional ranks and you should get drafted.
Downside, can't get drafted if you don't play.
Son knew all the risks and wanted to give it a shot and did not work out for him at NMJC but he has benefited from the experience.
If you are expecting the coaches to put there arm around you and love on you and tell you how good you are it is probably not the place to go. But if you want to test yourself see if you have what it takes to make it to the pros it is a great opportunity. Hope this helps.
