In case it may benefit a Division I athlete in baseball (or any other sport) whom you know, the NCAA recently approved a rule change that may give some Division I athletes an additional year of eligibility in their sport.
Athletes who were a redshirt athlete in their freshman year of college, even if it was at a junior college, and then missed (or will miss) another season due to injury or illness may be able to receive an Extension of Eligibility waiver to get a 6th year added to their "clock."
Previously, a simple redshirt year (no injury involved) had not been accepted by the NCAA as a reason for missing a season due to "circumstances beyond the athlete's control." This new rule will now allow an athlete to claim a freshman redshirt year as a "missed opportunity."
This waiver option is also available at NCAA Division II programs. If you know of an athlete who may benefit from this rule change, encourage them to contact the compliance office at their university, or they can contact us at www.informedathlete.com for more details.
