No offense intended, but the best use I have found for FED's umpire manual is to help start a fire in my fireplace on a cold November evening.

FED does not, as do the people at PBUC and CCA, study mechnanics and plays to see how theirs hold up under game conditions. FED seems to believe that mechanics are a static portion of umpiring.

FED and CCA as a result of their studies ammend, adapt and otherwise change mechanics from time to time to make sure they really do their job; putting the umpire in the best possible position at the best possible time to evaluate a play and make the best possible call.

The NFHS umpire manual is routinely disregarded by umpires because there are manuals published that are more through and more often updated...

That being said, you can get some basic information in it...(understand that you will work with some HS umpires who have never opened any umpire manual....)

Read it, then pick up the CCA manual...In your read of the CCA manual you will start to see the differences that make it stand out as superior....

Keep up the good work...
I wouldn't bother with the FED manual. Get the CCA Manual EVERY YEAR (2009 is out now), it is constantly changing.

If you REALLY want to learn, go to a pro camp or clinic. It doesn't matter if you've never called a pitch in your life - there will be others there just like you. When you graduate, you will be MUCH better than a whole bunch of umpires who have been at the HS varsity level for years, but who don't do Jack Squat for recurrent training.
