The Australian Baseball League is going to hold an All-star game made up of Australian and International players in the league. It will be Team Australia vs. The World. Congratulations to Alex Burg for being named one of two catchers (the other is from Japan) on the World Team. The Australians see this as a tremendous opportunity to showcase their players - possibly the most watched game for Australia ever!! It will be televised in Australia and Asia and through the MLB network in the United States.
It is difficult to comprehend how small the game of baseball is and how hard they are working to grow it. 2 funny stories - my son is playing on the State League in Australia and one of his jobs has been to work at an after school program to try to teach and grow the game. The first day he thought he would warm the kids up and told them to "run the bases". They ran to first base and just kept going into right field. On another occasion, he set up a t-ball game. One of the girls got up to bat and turned the opposite way to hit. He explained to her that she needed to turn around to bat. She looked at him as if she had a very big and important secret. She walked over to him and whispered "Yes, but that is where everyone is standing". Makes me laugh everytime I think about it.
But the families and players that are into baseball are really into it and love to watch their players play, so they are very excited about the All-Star game. Should be fun. Congrats again to Alex.
