I can tell you with the DMN it is all in what you put into it. When #1 son played for MHS I made sure all our scores were in on time, as well as stats. I also used to email the DMN guy things he might not notice, if we beat a team ranked ahead of us, if we won several in a row, if a kid had a great game, etc. We always got covered. I don't think most coaches care as much about the paper as parents do.(That is not a shot at coaches) So I just took it upon myself to make sure the paper had everything and more. It worked.
The Star Telegram beat writer is definately a "Homer" for one team. We played Friday night and won a very good and close game. The next morning the write up basically said we Squirreled out and won the game. Even had the picture of the losing pitcher in the paper...

Not that this has a thing to do with the players. I just get kinda tired of hearing how great a certain team is in the paper...

Just my rant for today...

That's all good stuff, Robert S. That school and those players should give you a pat on the back.

The DMN doesn't have enough writers to be everywhere. We ask home coaches to report results for each game. We ask for stats by 5 p.m. on Sundays. If you don't see something in the paper or online, more than likely it wasn't reported to us.

If the DMN doesn't have enough writers then can you explain why there is 8 pages of HS Football coverage? Poor excuse to me...

Far and away, most of that coverage is called in to the office by coaches or someone designated to report for the school

Colleyville stats have not been posted for 3 weeks!

Northwest reported stats one time this season about three weeks ago and not since.

In previous seasons, I enjoyed seeing the numbers for the different teams out there, especially teams with kids I know, but since they are incomplete, inaccurate, obsolete or not there at all, I now skip it.

I have to agree with Robert on this one. My experience pertains mainly to our local paper, but I think the same problem persists at DMN.

I noticed that we got very little coverage. But, I would notice some of the other schools would get more coverage. I called and talked to the sports editor and he was very blunt in saying that it was our coach back then. Editor would call and leave a message, but would not get a call back. Hard to do a write up if the coach would not return calls. Some parents emailed the editor - and in writing he confirmed the same thing. So, if your coach is not doing it, parents have to be proactive and take care of it themselves.

Luckily we have a "stat rat" coach at our school, and Coach Sherman is FANTASTIC. He eats, sleeps and breaths stats. Our stats are updated right after the game or the next day at the latest. He also puts them in MaxPreps (which keeps track of fielding %, OBP, Slugging %, etc...) He is an awesome coach who will make an excellent head coach in the future. The players and parents love him. We are lucky to have him.
