Are you saying that a NH sophomore high school baseball player has been given a baseball scholarship to BC? Really? BC gave a kid a scholarship based on his Freshman season in NH high school baseball? Sorry...I find this impossible to believe. If there was a kid that earned a D1 scholarship based on his Freshman year, I think we'd not only know exactly who he was, but he'd have his own website.
Additionally, colleges can't initiate communication with a sophomore. I don't know all the rules but it's probably not even allowed. Even if it is, why would a school commit a scholarship when a kid is still three years away from being able to play for them? It's too risky, and they don't have enough scholarship slots to throw around like that. I'm not buying it.
You obviously don't know all the rules, you should probably brush up on them seeing as how your a varsity baseball coach.

Anyways doesn't really matter what you believe we work closely with Coach Woods at BC and he told me personally about the two players from the GSBA that gave him verbals this winter, although we already knew.

I'm just excited to have these kind of players coming back next fall and having them get the recognition from D1 schools that their talent deserves. Should really challenge the hitters who are in the 2010 program.

LJ Sandwich: Actually, it is possible for a sophomore to verbally commit, but it doesn't mean it is binding. The reality is nothing is considered legitimate until the offer is in writing and signed by both parties. Therefore the school doesn't need a scholarship-slot to save for a verbal commitment. God-forbid, if either one of these boys gets hurt the school is under no obligation to honor their verbal commitment. Harsh, but that is how the NCAA works.
Read around in the recruiting thread of these boards to get more information. I was curious and looked around, interesting stuff!
LJ,
The key piece in your sentence is that the coach can't INITIATE the communication. I am not an expert but from reading elsewhere on this site, as long as the player initiates the communication it is allowed. Also I think communication is allowed if a player is on campus for a visit then communication is allowed.

From what I've seen these types of early commitments are not totally uncommon with big D1 schools but not something we see up here in NH (or Maine) very often...

Iron,
Thanks, and again, to be clear, I hope I am wrong and D1 schools are seriously considering NH talent at all grade levels. I know you have some great talent in Londonderry. I've personally watched the progression of Carollo on his AAU team for a few years, and he should be a force this year once again. Good luck.
No problem, I was curious about that too!

Thanks for the note on Carollo. He doesn't get much in the way of attention on these boards, but he more than earns it where it counts! Kasey was the top pitcher on a 20 win team in Class L and was the only sophomore to be selected for first team all-state.
He recently went to the Northeastern showcase and impressed the staff enough (sat between 84-86) to be one of 20 juniors invited back for the school's junior day. (sorry, not sure how this evolved into a Kasey infosession- he is just a pretty good kid).

My pleasure...my son was at Northeastern as well and works with the same AAU pitching coach Kasey has. My guy was clocked in the low to mid 80's with his fastball, which was better than nearly all the sophomores that I saw with the naked eye. Kasey is a class act as a kid as well, must be a joy to coach.

Ironwill you mention being asked back for Junior Day at Northeastern as only 20 kids are invited back. I'm curious is this just a show and tell. What do you think this Junior Day is all about as my son Kyle Turner from NN recieved an invite also.
From the letter Kasey showed me it sounds like they took the top juniors they saw and basically put them on their radar. Just a first step, but still impressive!
I hosted the mini-showcase at Londonderry and Kyle did very well there (if I remember he was around 84 that day). I will be setting up another one this year and I hope Kyle can make it! He seems like a really good kid.

There are 4 2012's listed on the roster for last years showcase league. The two players mentioned on here (1 by name and one by town) are both 2012's and fall under Shipbuilder's statement "from our showcase league" so the kid from Maine could be the other as he didn't state from NH specifically.

Seeing I don't think that the kid from Merrimack would get a verbal yet...I am putting my money on the kid from Maine...lol.
