Here's something I'm wondering about. Kid signs an NLI for football in February of his senior year with School A.  Then, over the course of the next few months, he receives interest in Baseball from School B. Can he choose to sign for baseball at School B?

Or is he bound to play football at School A once the NLI is signed?

So, it looks like a kid could wait until the end of the football signing period to make a decision on which way to go. Does that sound right?

Verbal commitmenst for both football and baseball are many times made way ahead of the signing date.  Today is the early signing day for baseball for the 2014s.  If you wait until February - April 1 of Senior year, most of the D1s (probably not all) have locked up their recruiting class.  There may be D3s looking for football and baseball players at that time, but there won't be NLIs involved.

Very nice and congratulations to your son.  If the boy decides to play baseball, I would read rules that define the bind and how to excuse yourself and go from there.  Below is has information to help you out.

Stafford, if the athlete signs a Letter of Intent with an NAIA school, and then has a chance to attend an NCAA school (whether or not they sign an NCAA National Letter of Intent), they won't be bound by the NAIA letter since they are two totally different organizations.  Such a move could impact the athlete if he later decides to return to an NAIA school, but otherwise the only impact might be negative word of mouth comments from the NAIA coach.

Here's an update on where 2014 is at with football and baseball.

One D2 football program has offered a roster spot. This is son's preferred school for football.

Another D2 football school is waiting to hear back from the application and institutional scholarship process first - then we will hear about athletic dollars. Made second visit there this past weekend

A friend visited the NAIA baseball school that has offered and saw son's name on their white board of recruits. Their process is very similar to the aforementioned football school. Apply, see about institutional scholarships and then they "bridge the gap" with baseball money.

Our local D2 baseball program (literally 10 minutes from home) has contacted after son did their fall camp for fun and to get some baseball work in during football season. Emailed him and said they are not fully funded and have spent their money for next year. However, they will work to get as much academic aid as possible. This school is enrollment driven and will bring in a lot of players and uses the j.v. team as a developmental program.

And then there are three D3's that have football and baseball programs that are asking him to visit, fill out the application and financial aid forms. Making a visit to one of these D3's next week.

Nothing is settled and nothing stands out. Football was only brought into the mix late into his senior season a couple of months ago. Son is working toward his senior season of high school baseball and is doing a showcase for uncommitted players this weekend.
