Good question OS8.
My son wanted to get out of the our "lily-white liberalville" and experience big city life that had ethnic diversity, so that was part of his "fit". As parents, our thought was that in order for us to "feel the fit", we needed some comfort in knowing that he had a safe way to experience his desire, and escape if necessary

.
In hindsight, Chicago was not near as bad as we had thought it might be. With History being one of his degrees and many ethnic communities including African American, Indian, Irish, Jewish, Mexican, Native American, Polish, Swedish, Tibetan, Ukrainian, and more in the downtown area, and him living on the corner of Little Italy, Greektown, the car ended up being a valuable resource in regard to learning about the history within those communities. He knows that town well, did a lot of historical research on the streets, and will eat almost any ethnic dish, In his case the car was an educational tool in this immensely historical city.
