...and so my son reports he made an 11 mile round-trip walk from his dorm to Target to buy one 5-pound weight for Thrower's Ten. Left at 6pm, got back at 11pm.

I don't even know what to think!!

Krak:

My guy has not had a car all three years and it has never been a real issue. I just got off the phone with him and he was at Baseball Express by the airport with a couple of guys on the team.

I know when he was a FY it was tough, but he learned to reach out and ask. Also, the cab company in town gives the kids a price break and they will charge his TigerBucks. Additionally, the bus line (#5 line) runs north/south on Mccullough or walk over to Broadway (#10 line) and the east/west on Hilldebrand. He can get custom bus routes on the website at www.viainfo.net. I did a search for the Northstar mall (where Target is located) it was a 20 minute bus trip.

Also, he needs to learn the "shortcut" through Olmos basin to the Quarry. It is a little more than a mile and everything he needs is there (it maybe another mile just walking across the center). Also, Walmart is a little more than a mile north of campus on Jones-Maltzberger (which should be just off the #5 bus line).

I will make a point of saying hi this weekend when I am in town and will see what I can do to help him with logistics.

Seriously, a cheap bicycle will knock the time down to an hour.

Bingo! I walk a bit. 3.5 to 4 MPH is about right for an old person like me. There should be plenty of good use bikes for sale on campus. If not try http://sanantonio.craigslist.o...h/sss?query=bicycles

3Fingeredglove is my favortie poster because he does calculations and obviously you do as well Dad04. I have been doing a four mile walk and it takes me one hour and 20 minutes which is 3 mph.

In the instant case, I suspect maybe the young man dilly-dallyed a bit when he got to his destination so it might have hurt his overall speed numbers a litte bit Big Grin
IMO, every situation is different and location dictates the need for a car. For 4 years my son had a car in downtown Chicago. You'd think with the L-train, bus system, and a 6'5" gait there were plenty of modes of transportation. However, without making this sound "bad", a pasty white college boy walking through potentially "seedy" big city neighborhoods, or waiting for other modes of transportation in those same neighborhoods was an issue for a parent to be concerned about.

Seldom will you hear a parent say "I hope you're driving tonight"

Good question OS8.

My son wanted to get out of the our "lily-white liberalville" and experience big city life that had ethnic diversity, so that was part of his "fit". As parents, our thought was that in order for us to "feel the fit", we needed some comfort in knowing that he had a safe way to experience his desire, and escape if necessary Wink .

In hindsight, Chicago was not near as bad as we had thought it might be. With History being one of his degrees and many ethnic communities including African American, Indian, Irish, Jewish, Mexican, Native American, Polish, Swedish, Tibetan, Ukrainian, and more in the downtown area, and him living on the corner of Little Italy, Greektown, the car ended up being a valuable resource in regard to learning about the history within those communities. He knows that town well, did a lot of historical research on the streets, and will eat almost any ethnic dish, In his case the car was an educational tool in this immensely historical city.
I think the length of time was pretty close to average.

An average person can walk 3 miles an hour.

Figuring he was carrying the added weight on his return trip and stop for a drink or nourishment. 5 hours is about right.

I personally think he should get some kudos. That's quite a hike to the store.

With no girlfriend, maybe online shopping is his next best friend.
