My son is a junior in HS this year. Just turned 16 this month. I have taken him to 2 instructional showcase events this summer. One at a Big East school and another at a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) school. He received positive feedback at both events from the coaches. He is a RH pitcher and 1st baseman.

He is 6'4 1/2", 230. He is not the fastest running kid for sure. He was a starting pitcher on his high school team last season, when not pitching he split time at 1st base. He always hit 3rd in the batting order whether he was pitching or playing 1st. When not pitching or playing 1st base he was the DH and hit 3rd. Fastball velocity is 80-82, changeup is around 70 and curveball 67-70. Very good control and composure.

What if anything should I be doing regarding the college recruiting process? What kind of team should he be playing on next summer after the high school season (league team, travel team, tournament team)?? Should I contact coaches?

Thanks

Glad you found this website. It'll help you focus and help your son focus his energy on getting to the next level. Make sure you read the recruiting timeline link so you know where you are going.

Probably the best thing to start with is sitting down with your son (when you can snag him for a few minutes of serious thought) and get him to list the things that are important to him in a college. Remember, he is 16...so don't be surprised if he says "Good food" or "No homework" at first. The key is to get him to think about what he'd like study or where he'd like to live (year round sun, four seasons, west coast, south, city, town or country). If he has always been a very serious student, he's probably got a few four year colleges in mind...if he's not gung-ho school, consider a good two year college where he can get his academic feet wet and still play serious baseball. You will probably have to digest a lot of information \ and regurgitate it for him...because it is a LOT to consider for most kids..particularly boys who play baseball.

Pictures paint a thousand words: if you see a college that looks interesting..send him the link to the video tour on the college website (if they have a virtual tour)...might stimulate him a bit!

Good luck..post all your questions!!

I agree but I am concerned about too much pitching. He played his high school season, then with his summer team. He started pitching indoors in late December to get ready for the high school season and pitched until the first week of August. That's over 7 months pitching on a, at the time, 15 year old arm.

I don't mind that he takes a few months off from pitching. He is still working out to build strength, conditioning and speed. He is also hitting (tee work, soft toss and some live) 3 to 5 times a week. The hitting work will not stop.
Save your money and your time. Right now focus on school , working at getting stronger , resting the throwing motion while working at the things that will strengthen the arm etc.

Go into the JR year and be ready to compete at your very best with the desire to help your team win anyway you can. Next summer get lined up with a good showcase team that will get you out in front of the college coaches.

Everything will fall into place if you take care of your end of the deal. With the amount of showcase events , teams etc you should be just fine.

There will be always be people willing to take your money. They will want to prey on your fear that you are not doing enough or not doing the right things. Dont let that happen. Relax , work hard , have fun , and it will all be fine.
"proactive" is the word with college baseball recruiting. respond to all inquiries you receive and on your own contact the schools/programs you become interested in.

i would sit down and prepare a list of roughly 12 school that your son is interested in--some reach schools, some middle and some safer programs. contact those recruiting coordinators and go from there.

i'd also look at some showcases this coming summer.
