No response from coach

I posted earlier to say thanks for all the advice on here...Now I am here for more. As I mentioned earlier my son committed to play at a D2 college....We visited, met with coach. He asked are you ready to commit. My son says yes. They shake hands. and the coach tells him that we will get the offer sheet out to him in a day or 2. We had emails by the time we got home saying they are looking forward to the fall and the pitching coach says he will send a workout program to my son and that he cant wait to begin working with him as he sees great growth potential. Welcoming him to the team etc etc....

 

So we think all is good...

 

On Monday the coach emails saying he needs my sons NCAA ID #....We didn't have one. We really didn't know about to be honest... He said to get that done and send him the number once we receive it as he cant send the NLI till he has that number.... So we did....Now we haven't heard a thing. My son emailed the coach the number. Waited till Thursday sent a text....no response...then calls cell number and left coach a message today. No response yet.

 

Should I assume they have gone in a different direction? Should I give it more time? If they went in another direction we would just like to know? We are kinda panicking around here due to no response.

 

any advice or thoughts?

I'm assuming by NCAA ID # you mean registering with the NCAA Eligibility Center. 

 

Have you completed the FAFSA and supplied the coach with the EFC?

 

Those two items are all he should need at this point, but you will have to complete any outstanding tasks list on the NCAA eligibility center so they can complete verification of eligibility.

yeah the NCAA Eligibility center...The only task we got left is the HS transcript....FAFSA is completed should I send the EFC to the coach. I figured admissions would handle that.

How could a coach extend  a bona fide commitment if he didn't know that player was eligible?  No one talked to son until he got in all the necessary paperwork to show he would be eligible.

 

Didn't your son ever discuss with his guidance counselor or HS coach about wanting to play past HS?  He would have had to be taking the right courses to be eligible, for D1 as well as D2.

 

If your son is a senior there is a backlog this time of year he may have a number but not inputted into the system.

TPM...I am more concerned about the lack of communication. Like I said in my other post. the school he is graduating from has never had anyone play a college sport. So they are learning just as we are.

No excuses. You joined this site years ago, not sure why you never did your homework or asked questions, there is plenty of info here to make it happen.

He can call the NCAA I think for info, there is nothing to do at this point but wait.

The coach would need at least the EFC to put help put together an athletic scholarship/financial aid package if he's going to offer one.  The FAFSA is needed to determine any financial aid (loans, grants, etc) regardless of whether an athletic scholarship is offered or not.

 

My memory is a little hazy, but after meeting with the coach we had to complete the FAFSA and provide the EFC.  Somewhere along the line we completed all tasks required by the NCAA Eligibility Center.  I can't remember if we finished the NCAA tasks before or after the NLI was sent.  It was all around the same time frame.

not making excuses...we never thought the college thing was gonna happen to be quite honest....I guess that is an excuse...I don't know

 

and again I am more concerned about the lack of communication back from the coach. Not, the not having the FAFSA or NCAA Eligibility complete....which both are now.

The administration will get the EFC and all information from the FAFSA so long as you listed the school in the FAFSA (can list up to 10) application.  I'm not sure the school admin will go out of their way to provide the EFC to the coach - it probably depends on the school.

In my son's case the coach asked us to provide the EFC.

Understandable.  I sort of went through the same thing last year when son got a text from a D2 assistant coach the day after I moved him home from JuCo.   Things went rather quickly after that.  I think my head didn't stop spinning until August.

 

Just keep in mind D2 coaches are in heavy recruitment mode about this time of year.  I know at one point my son's coach was out of state for several days on a recruiting trip.

I was going to reply earlier but didn't see this until you said all was well. My advice would have been relax, give it a little more time. Remember, although our son is the only one we are thinking about, the coaches have many players to contact, scout, visit with, etc.  Well, good luck. One more note parents--take care of the NCAA eligibility stuff EARLY as possible!

dolphindans son is a 2015. I dont think some of you realize that.
That means he should have heard from the coach as fall semester is right around the corner. 100% effort should be made to contact him or his office.
I would be making contacts with Juco programs at this point in time just in case.
