I recently transferred to a D2 school closer to my home because of financial reasons.  I emailed the head coach about possible walk on tryouts for the upcoming fall season. He emailed me back stating that he doesn't think he will be holding any tryouts due to the team being full. I wanted to know if anyone has experienced this at the college level? Is this usually common among coaches? Not sure what my next step should be. I am confident that I'm able to compete and earn a spot on the team if I'm given an opportunity to try out.

Unless the rule has changed I believe technically they have to hold tryouts even if it's a farce. At least the coach is being honest about no openings. I know a kid who showed up for walk on tryouts. The tryout lasted 45 minutes. The head coach wasn't there. After 45 minutes the players were called off the field and told there weren't any openings. What conversation, if any the kid had with the coach in advance I don't know. I did t think he could compete where he was trying to walk on.

I am not 100% but only D1 has to hold open tryouts, in fall,  and advertise when.

D2 does not have to hold open tryouts because they do allow private tryouts, and other times depending on the player status (HS, college junior, etc).  If this is wrong please someone correct me.

NCAABylaw 13.11.2

D2

May conduct a tryout of a prospect only on campus or site at which practice or competition is normally conducted.

Not more than one tryout per prospect per sport.

Limited in length to two hours.

Prospect must undergo medical exam prior to tryout (includes sickle cell).

Timing of tryouts

Must be senior in HS or completed hs eligibility.

2 year college, only after conclusion of sport season or anytime after eligibility has exhausted.

4 year college, must have written permission to contact or after the conclusion of the sport season.

So in other words, unlike D1 the coach does not have to do mandatory fall tryouts, only at his discretion.

I think the info is correct.

So if a D2 coach is truly interested in a player (has seen via video) then it is safe to assume they would invite the prospect to the campus for a visit/tryout as long as all of the "rules" as stated above have been adhered to?

I am not saying to assume anything, but a coach might invite a HS player to a camp, for a JUCO or 4 year player a tryout might be necessary.  Or, if close by they would go travel to see a player regardless of the circumstances.

2ndMarDiv, I've thought about this a bit more following your original post.  I think it will depend upon how they conduct the workout.  If your son is the only recruit working out with the rest of the team on a particular day, they are definitely interested.  If, however, they are conducting a group workout and your son is just one of a number of recruits working out for them, then the level of interest may not be as high - at least not so far.

I do know the coach asked my son to pick a date for the visit and they have not asked for money. He was told to bring his baseball gear (coach's word) for the workout. I'm hoping this is genuine interest this is one of his top choices.

More than likely it would be, good luck!
