Well, the lad left his Rawlings HOH at the field and, surprise - it's gone. I told him I'd split the cost of the next one. He looked through some catalog and picked out a Nokona. I've heard of them, but have never seen one. Are they good gloves? don't recall ever seeing one in an MLB broadcast. He already ordered it, so not looking for alternate opinions - just whether or not this was a good purchase.
Thank you.

Gloves do not require a MLB contract. Anyone can wear any glove as long as it fits the rules. Unless they are under endorsement contracts by a glove company, then the player gets in trouble for not wearing the product.

Nokona does not beleived in paying professional players to wear their gloves. That is the only reason they are not being worn by a MLB player.

Bats require MLB approval which involes fees paid to MLB. Nokona's new bats are not currently MLB approved.

My son got his Nakona 6 yrs ago. It has survived year round use (and abuse) and adsorbed lots of sweat here in south central Texas. Other than the index finger back panel, the outer part of the glove barely showed any wear, but the inside (next to the hand) was cracked, torn and wore out. Part of the palm leather was tearing at a seam.

We contacted Nakona, got instructions on how to send it in for repairs and we got it back 10 days later. New insides, new index back finger panel and new palm leather, all for $70 (includes shipping and handling). The glove looks new and still feels as good as when it was first broke in.

Very good company, very good customer service, very good product. Their glove conditioner (in the tube) is very good, too.
I can't say enough about Nokona baseball gloves.

Each one of my three boys have (now) owned a Nokona glove. I got the youngest a new Nokona yesterday for his birthday, and for making the high school team. I got myself a Nokona hand me down that just neeed a little leather work. Great gloves, and a great value over the life the glove. They last foreever!

Agree with others that the conditioning product is outstandng too.
Only glove you'll ever see on my hand. I've had the same one since I entered high school and you can imagine how much use it's had. There's some cosmetic damage (mainly because I haven't vaselined it as often as I should) but I still love it. They do tend to run a little heavier due to the vaseline/quality of leather, but I've found this to be a minor adjustment that I don't notice at all at this point. I've found that vaseline works MUCH better than any glove conditioner that I've seen. I like the way they explained it to me: leather = skin. Would you take care of your skin with simply oils?

They also claim to be the only glove that is mass manufactured in the US (other companies only make custom mitts stateside). I can't validate this claim. I can't give advice on which model because their headquarters burned down in the recent past along with all of their prototypes -- this brought about a new line that looks even better than the old stuff.

I couldn't endorse Nokona more, everything is great. Everyone in my family has had one and loved it.
Krak -- Agree with all positive comments about Nokona gloves. SP_son has played with Nokona since he was 12. He LOVES his Nokona's. His N80 1B mitt is so important to him, and has served him so well for so long that he bought another glove to use for practices, so he could save the wear on his N80's for game action only (they no longer make the N80, so he wants to stretch it out as long as possible).

Vaseline works just fine. For first few years, son would put a light coat of Vaseline on gloves every couple of weeks just to keep everything supple. However, he has changed over to a combination of mink oil and saddle soap in recent years. He uses the saddle soap to clean & condition the leather, then uses the mink oil to provide extra conditioning and water protection. He is fanatical about taking care of his gear and really loves this mix for glove treatment.

Nokona Gloves & Trinity Wood Bats (yellow birch) are what you'll find in my guys bag.

Hope your player finds one he loves. Good luck.

I just bought my daughter a Nokona Glove. It is the softest glove I've ever seen. Naturally, they make all kinds and some of their gloves are as hard as rocks. Those gloves take a very long time to break in. THEY USE QUALITY LEATHER IN ALL OF THEIR GLOVES. Nokona was the choice for us.

Since this post in 2004, my daughter has gone through 2 more gloves. She just asked for a new glove this past week. I have no idea how many gamesshe has played with this last Nokona glove. Conservatively, I'd say she played at least 400+ games.
