Players & parents:

This is the time of the baseball year to study the baseball game and your goals and objectives. Pro scouts are preparing their travel schedule for the Spring. College coaches are preparing for their Spring Tournaments.

The HS player and College player will have "brief" opportunity to impress.

Pro scouts evaluate the parents and the players as they prepare for the game.

1. When does the player "shut down" the cell phone? Does he arrive prepared for the game?

2. What does his eyes observe when he enters the field?

3. How does he wear his uniform?   Does he wear jewerly?

4. Where do the parents sit ? Behind home plate? With other parents? Are they shooting video?

Scouts have a "strong and effective" pipline with College coaches.

Can I get more information of what to do and not to do as a parent? Our son has been having MLB scouts come to his games this season and this is all new to us. We have always sat behind home plate. We also video though not every game. He has older brothers that love to get the videos since they can't be there. We have no interaction with our son until after the game and the boys come out into the stands.

When my son was playing (especially when he was pitching) I wasn't allowed to be in the bleachers anywhere behind the plate.   I went thru HS watching from the 3rd base line past the dugout and college down the RF line lol

I asked my son once if it bothered him if I was sitting behind the plate etc when he threw.  He looked at me and said, "If I'm worried about where you're sitting I have a lot more problems than that.  I never have any idea where you are."  HA!

You can sit anywhere as long as you’re not making yourself visible to the environment outside cheering. If you’re doing video get away from the line of sight of the player.

In high school I was the scorekeeper for a year. I had to spray paint a “do not enter” circle around me after a couple of games. Parents didn’t realize how ugly it looks to be approaching the scorekeeper to argue hits and errors.

After the circle they started calling an emailing after they saw the boxscore online in the evening.

The scout thing didn't start for my son until juco, but my goal was that they couldn't identify me as his parent through my behavior (or attire, lol!). I never wanted to insert myself into something that's purely his...

It's a blessing to have an athlete that's getting MLB attention, congratulations and enjoy the journey!

@Sue54,

I agree; keep a low profile.  If the scout is serious about your player, the scout will get his number and yours and make contact at some point.  Most scouts will want to meet the parents, especially when watching high school prospects.  They will meet College guys at a coffee shop or set up a video call, but high schoolers usually get an in-home visit with parents present.

Although some scouts might want to be friendly, most just want to see how tall you are (lol) or how crazy you are.   In my opinion, at a game, it is best to be pleasant and polite from a respectful distance and wait and see what happens.

I would not sit next to the scout or engage in any way; however, I do know those who set up a few rows behind the scout, just to see the velo readings.  They know you are looking at them, so they keep a blank face.

Scouts will carefully watch the player warm up and stay for about three innings if the pitches are competitive.  After they get the velo readings, they might observe the player from both the first base and the third base side to evaluate his form/mechanics.  They won't stay the whole game, so don't be upset if they get up and leave.    It is not that they are losing interest in your son; they just have other players to see.  Many scouts are tasked with creating a report on any potential prospect in their region. They are busy!

Have fun, and congrats to your son!

@RHP_Parent Thank you. Great advice. Son has done a couple zoom meetings and at least one in person. So far they are staying the entire time he pitches though they do leave and come back. Maybe they are going to the baselines to watch during those times. Some have gone to watch his warmups as well.

We have never talked to the scouts. We just let them do their thing without bothering them. Sounds like we are handling it right. Thank you all. It is exciting to watch.

@russinfortworth Our sons sound very similar. The 1st game where we couldn't sit where we normally do and ended up being closer to the scouts than we preferred we took no video. First time we haven't. He said, " Take the video, you are still my parents". LOL. We just were unsure and also didn't want them to know who we were. Parents kept coming over so I am sure that they ended up figuring that part out anyway.

Lol!  Thanks, as my diet Dr Pepper just came up through my nose.   I'm still laughing my @ss off!  Too funny my friend.

I'm picturing Les Nessman putting the yellow tape around his cubicle in WKRP in Cincinnati.  Classic, but probably too far back in the archives for some.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SkP9DKnOgn0

My favorite was Johnny and the state trooper. The more he drank the quicker his reflexes. We play “Turkeys Away” every Thanksgiving.
