Big Grin

Rather than continue the debate about the obvious benefits that size can bring, thought it might be interesting to start a thread about players (especially pitchers) who would be considered not so tall by general baseball standards. Those that are doing some good things at any level High School and above.

Perhaps this thread will reveal the fact that there really is hope for the smaller player. At least it is my attempt at that.

Not looking for arguments or debate, just a place to honor the not so big guys who are doing well.

I will start with a few recent developments...

Jeremy Jeffress RHP Halifax County Virginia, listed 6-0/180 in our database. Last night touched 100 mph on the gun and was consistent 95-98 for 7 innings.

Tim Lincecum RHP 6-0/160 U of Washington and Brad Lincoln RHP 6-0/200 are considered two of the top 4 college pitching prospects entering this years draft. Both appear to be certain early first rounders and one or the other may just end up being the first pick of the draft.

Kyle Drabek RHP 6-0/180 Woodlands, TX. ranked the #1 prospect in high school baseball by pgcrosschecker.com One of the top high school lefties is Kasey Kiker LHP 5-10/185 Russell County HS, AL.

The pitchers with the most wins in the Major Leagues as of today. Those with 4 or more wins (there's 19 of them) 7 of those 19 include.
Greg Maddux RHP 6'0, 5-0
Pedro Martinez RHP 5'11, 5-0
Oscar Villarreal RHP 6'0, 4-0
Mike Maroth LHP 6'0, 4-1
Roy Oswalt RHP 6'0, 4-1
Wandy Rodriguez LHP 5'11, 4-0
Gustavo Chacin LHP 5'11, 4-1

Feel free to add not so tall players to the thread. Perhaps TPM might want to mention some of the top pitchers at Clemson this year.

If you wish I could continue periodically... Or I could just shut up about this topic. Red Face

Nice to see you on here.

Only by old baseball standards, mostly pertaining to RHPs. There really were some clubs that ordered their scouts to not turn in a 6'0 or under RHP. I think those days are changing fast.

As you can tell from the boldface that I added...that would be a very good development!
I put this on another post but I'm so proud I'll put it here too. My son is 5'10", 165 lbs. and has been Maple Woods Juco's #1 pitcher since he started there as a freshman (out of a staff of 19). Went to a very small high school (2A) but paved his own way and currently has 15-20 D1s and 1 of the best D2s in the country trying to get him to sign with them. Overcame size and the fact that he went to a high school that never got any attention cause it wasn't big enough. He's one of the smallest guy on the team.
My son and I attended a Big East Conference Game at Morgantown, WV two weekends ago pitting West Virginia University against the University of Louisville. UL had a shortstop listed on the roster as 5' 3". That is not a typo. 5' 3". He was the starter, had a gun for an arm and made a brilliant play on a bad hop. 5' 3" and starting for a DI in a major conference. Now that is a small guy making good. [He also ran out a drag bunt for a single]. There is hope for my 5'8" son yet.

TW344
TW,

Thanks for bringing up that kid!!! Here is where Louisville found him. He was 5’3/135 when he played in our Florida Qualifier for the Jupiter tournament. Amazing ability, big tools. 5'3/135 R/R and recruited by DI Colleges.

Here is an old release from the PG Website

Cates Named Tournament MVP

An extremely strong cast of hard throwing pitchers and a well balanced hitting line-up led the way for the Crush. Infielder Chris Cates (03) from Brandon high school was named tournament MVP. Cates, the smallest player in the tournament, put on a dazzling performance in the field, at the plate and on the bases. To be awarded the MVP trophy in this event speaks volumes about Cate's ability. Some 20 of the nation's highest rated players participated in the Ft Myers tournament.

In all fairness to players 6’ and over I have started compiling “their” list. I’m been typing all day and I’m still in the “A’s”. I plan on going 24/7 and have hired two temps to help input the information and have up-graded my hard drive to 100 GB. Be back soon! Big Grin

Ok PG,
Our senior ace, Josh Cribb is listed height 5'10", sports an ERA 2.66, record 8-0. He is a dynamo, throws 90's and uses just about every pitch known to man. A great college pitcher.
Junior, Jason Berken, 6-0 with an era of 2.65 , record 6-3. Jason is back from TJS and doing well. PJ Zocchi, 5'11", 3.83 ERA 3-0. The rest of our pitchers range from 6'1" to 6'2" with two at 6'3" and one at 6'4". I don't know how long ago those heights were taken. I know mine listed his freshman year, has grown slightly but his height and record remains the same on record.
Outfielders range from 5'8" to 6'3" and infielders 5'9"-6'3". Our catchers are from 5'11" to 6'2".
I am talking about heights in college baseball, not the draft, so anyone thinking those ACC coaches don't like smaller guys, you are incorrect. Ability and coachibility takes precedence. And some of our pitchers do not throw 90+, though most do.
Bighit,
Nice to see you and I agree with you, who ever said 6' was small! Eek
I have scouted Salsa's son, Travis Denker, who has been playing 3rd base for FL State League Dodgers who is only 5'9". Travis is really starting to come around as hitter and solid defensively at third. Wonder if some of the other posters here remember Salsa ???? tater

Bet he could clear a few things up Big Grin
