I got the following from Steve Ellis's "tips":

"

Here's another baseball pitching tip...

In my opinion, dominating your school league
remains the surest way to get noticed by MLB
scouts.

I don't care if you're from Alaska or your
graduating class is 50.

If you've truly got all the qualities a pro
ball player must have, people will talk and
pro scouts will find you."

Not sure if he's that out of touch with today's recruiting and scouting or if we're all wasting a lot of dough.

It should read ... If you throw 90+ in high school it doesn't matter where you play they'll find you. Then there's a matter of who finds you. Do you want to be found by local colleges or colleges around the country?

Mark Rogers, a 5th round pick of the Brewers about ten years ago is from an island, population 200 in Maine. He was headed for UMaine until he attended a couple of showcases. Then he had his pick. He would have played for Miami had he not been selected 5th and signed for a lot of money.

Most of us aren't wasting a lot of dough, because most of us don't have kids who have the qualities required for pro ball. I think most of us have kids who can play at some level of college, and we're trying to maximize our kids' chances of making that happen.

But even for the rare few who are pro prospects, I don't think dominating your school league is the "surest" way to get noticed by scouts (though it's probably the least expensive). Area Code tryouts, National showcases, Top Academy teams, etc. will all get you noticed.

Jake Johansen had a 5.40 ERA and gave up 109 hits in 88 1/3 IP at Dallas Baptist University as a redshirt junior in 2013. He was given $820,000 after being drafted 68th overall by the Washington Nationals following that season.

For pro ball- results are nice. Tools are better.
