PORTLAND, Ore. -- Oregon State baseball coach Pat Casey, who led the Beavers to their first College World Series title last month, has interviewed for the coaching job at Notre Dame, according to reports published Tuesday night.

The Oregonian reported that Casey could be offered the job Wednesday, but that he would not make a decision until Thursday at the earliest. If he accepts the Fighting Irish job, Casey would replace Paul Maineri, who left Notre Dame on June 28 to become LSU's coach.

According to The Oregonian, Notre Dame is offering Casey a base salary of $300,000 a year, a significant raise from his base salary of $120,000 at Oregon State.

The Portland Tribune reported that Oregon State athletic director Bob De Carolis has been working on a contract extension for Casey.

Casey led the Beavers to a 50-16 mark this season, the best record in school history. Oregon State became the first school to win six elimination games at the College World Series, beating North Carolina 3-2 in the decisive game of the three-game championship series.

Casey, 45, has compiled a 391-253-4 record in 12 years at Oregon State.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) -Oregon State baseball coach Pat Casey got a new 10-year contract from the school Friday.
Casey interviewed with Notre Dame earlier this week, but decided to stay with the national champions. Athletic director Bob De Carolis said Casey's new deal includes base pay of $230,000, along with bonuses and side deals that would raise his annual salary to close to $300,000. His base salary last year was $120,000.
The 45-year-old Casey said his decision was influenced heavily by the outpouring of support from the region, team and staff.
"It really blew me away,'' he said.
Casey has compiled a 391-253-4 record in 12 years at Oregon State.
Last month, the Beavers fought off elimination six times, becoming the first team in College World Series history to lose twice in Omaha and win the national championship.
Not surprised at all. I believe he wanted to stay all along.

I'm not sure you can win a national championship in baseball at ND because of the weather and conference...but then again, I would have never believed you could win one at OSU 3 years ago either.

I have a hunch who the new ND coach will ultimately be...and if I'm right it will be a pretty big surprise. We will see.

This looks like the new coach.

"Evansville, IN---One of the negatives about being considered a "mid-major" is there is always a bigger school waiting to scoop up your coaches.

It looks like that has happened to the Aces baseball program.

Sources in the Notre Dame Athletics Department tell NEWS 25 that Dave Dchrage will take over the Fighting Irish baseball program.

Just this past year, Schrage led the Aces to arguably the best season in school history.

U-E won the Missouri Valley regular season title, tournament title and a made trip to the NCAA Regional Championship game.

The Aces finished up with 43 wins, the second most in school history.

A press conference could come as early as Tuesday in South Bend.

Schrage would replace Paul Mainieri who left Notre Dame for LSU last month.

Baseball Coach Leaving UE

July 17, 2006

New Media Producer: Rachel Chambliss

You usually don't go north to take a baseball job, but this is one of those exceptions.

After just four years on the job, University of Evansville baseball coach Dave Schrage is leaving to become the new head coach at Notre Dame. The announcement came Monday afternoon, and a press conference in South Bend will be held Tuesday afternoon.

In four years at the Helm, the 45-year-old Schrage compiled a record of 131 wins and 108 losses, including the second best win season in UE history this year. The Aces went 43-and-22 and made it to the NCAA Regional finals at Charlottesville, Virginia this year.

He also led them to their first ever MVC regular season and post season tournament championships.

Schrage was asked by Notre Dame not to comment until Tuesday afternoon when he will be formally introduced to the media in South Bend at 4 p.m. Central time.
Also, Schrage’s former assistant coach Dave Seifert at UE has been offered a position at ND if he does not get the UE head job. He replaced Scott Lawler last year.

My son was recruited by both universities (UE and UALR). He had considerable interaction with both Lawler and Seifert. He decided to go to UALR because for the opportunity to be a part of their rebuilding process and to develop under 2 good coaches with their pitching credentials (Lawlers).

We were told Tuesday that Scott was going to be an assistant at Notre Dame. While being disappointed that Scott is leaving he has done nothing but good things for the development of my son. He is a unique individual that not only has the baseball knowledge but he can communicate and relate it to the players to get results.
One of my sons assistant coaches in apparently one of the candidates for the UE job. John Szefc is an excellent recruiter, I must say. Smile
quote:
McGillis hopes to hire Schrage's successor "within a week." He said he already has a "solid" group of "six or seven" candidates. He declined to identify them, but sources say the list of names that have already surfaced include these four: UE pitching coach and recruiting coordinator Dave Seifert, Eastern Kentucky head coach Elvis Dominguez, University of Illinois assistant Eric Snider and Louisiana-Lafayette assistant John Szefc.
