Hopefully, this is not too much of a 'had to be there' question.
With a runner on first, the batter hits a sure double to the right center field gap. R1 rounds second and collides with the shortstop and falls down. The batter sees this and returns to 1b because it appears that R1 will have to return to 2b. R1 makes it safely to 3b and the batter stays at 1b. The coach asks about the obstruction and the umpire says "I saw it and he would have made it to 3b". My question is can obstruction only apply to the obstructed runner and runners who would be forced to advance or could the batter have also been awarded 2b? This wasn't discussed by the coach and umpire, I was just wondering.
