Batter hits fly ball in foul territory close to his dugout. Catcher tries to get it as players from other team yells "drop it". Catcher does not make the catch, does not get touched or interfered with.

Umpire call verbal interference and call batter out.

I thought it was dead ball. Is this right?

Is the batter now 0 for 1? What is official ruling?

Under NFHS (Fed) Rules, interference by the offense or obstruction by the defense can be physical or verbal. If the game was being played under those rules, and almost all high school games are, verbal interference could likely be the correct call.

If interference was called in the above situation the batter would be out.

The verbal interference call is right. However, an umpire always needs to listen to what is being said. A partner once called this when the bench guys were telling the stealing-3rd runner to go back. He did not look good on that one.
