Coach Guzzo started recruiting locally shortly before he departed. Coach Meyers has continued that trend and has enjoyed the contributions of quite a few local kids. Coach, in a recent interview referred to Virginia as a hotbed of baseball talent. I'm sure he will go after the best players available regardless of where they come from, but it's good to see the local players have the opportunity to play before family and friends. I know, it's a blessing to be able to drive 20 minutes and see my son play out his college career.
I'm glad you mentioned Coach Guzzo because he did recruit some of the ball players at ODU. He is enjoying life at N.C. State and hasn't forgot that this area developes good talent. You might see him soon.

TOP SURPRISE: Old Dominion
Old Dominion hasn't experienced a winning season since 2000 and went 22-33, 5-19 a year ago, failing to make the Colonial Athletic Association tournament. Yet here are the Monarchs at 29-3, 12-0 and ranked in the Top 25 for the first time since May 1996. ODU's 18-game win streak tied Mississippi State for the longest streak this year and the 1985 edition of the Monarchs for the longest streak since the program moved to Division I in 1977. Credit second-year coach Jerry Meyers with the turnaround, much of it coming with the same roster with which ODU played the 2005 season. Junior righthander Jason Godin (7-0, 3.54), who logged 31 innings in 2004 and redshirted last year, and senior first baseman/DH Dana Arrowood, batting .431 in the cleanup spot a year after registering 29 at-bats, are products of that improvement. Freshmen Dan Hudson (5-0, 1.75), Anthony Shawler (.300-3-7 and 2-0, 3.24 with a save) and Ross Fetterly (1-0, 2.04 with two saves) have played well from the start.
cpkebaseballdad, congrat's to Patrick on a fine season so far.
Assistant Coaches, Ryan Morris, Nate Goulet and Thomas Seay also have worked very hard during this season.Good coaching will win out every time.

Lawman and SSBR, thank you for the kind words.

It's hard not to feel real good about being 31-4, never-the-less the ODU boys were a little dissapointed in their own play this weekend as they dropped their Friday game. Kudos to Hofstra who played an outstanding series defensively. We listened to the game on the internet radio and the Hofstra announcers were very excited about numerous spectacular diving catches made in the outfield. According to the announcers, Hofstra was pumped up and played perhaps their best ball of the season.

After sitting out a rainy Saturday, ODU won the double header on Sunday behind outstanding pitching from Godin and Hudson. As a team, we need to get a back on track offensively. I know it's hard to stay on fire offensively like we've seen at times this season, but we're not hitting as well as we were a couple of weeks ago. We need to give our pitchers a little more run support. We're gonna need more than two and three runs a game to obtain our goals in this already wildly successful season. IMHO.
