I'm sure some of the top players in Illinois juggle one or two sports in addition to baseball. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for keeping a swing in shape in the offseason while playing another sport competetively? All I know is one of the worst feelings is trying to hit an 88 mph fastball in 40 degree weather after shooting a basketball for three months.

our coach's son played a few years ahead of me and was a three sport athlete. he now plays at iowa and our coach said that the iowa coach was impressed by the fact that his son could mangage his time so he still had an outstanding baseball career. basically, even though basketball regionals and sectionals run through early season workouts, our coach encourages us to play multiple sports.
Competitors compete! That's what they do. We encourage all of our kids to play multiple sports IF THAT IS WHAT THEY WANT. We run a conditioning program all fall and winter. However, it is not mandatory and any coach/school that makes it so, is in violation of IHSA Policy. I do know of programs that skirt the rules and get those "experts" to run year round practices. A kid gets 4 years of high school. I think it is a shame that some of those kids feel such pressure to specialize. Heck, they are putting all of their eggs in one basket. Most of my kids play at least 2 sports. This year, I'm coaching 3 sports. We will be fine when the year starts. Its my job to get these kids ready WHEN OUR SEASON STARTS. JMHO!
