Next week, my son's scout team is off to Georgia.  They will work out at and tour a local DIII school (Covenant College -- about which I know nothing -- and will also attend a one day "team camp"  at the University of Georgia.   Then they play in the PG/WWBA 18U National Championship.   Lots and lots of baseball.  The kid is pretty pumped  Didn't play much during the HS season for various reasons, but has been working hard since school ended. His timing at the plate is still a little off,  but the swing still looks  sweet.  Made a couple of great, great catches in the outfield this past weekend.  So the defense is looking good.   Should be fun. Really hope he just relaxes, has a good time, and does his thing. First really big event of the summer for him.

Not at all  sure what we'll do when he's not playing baseball, though.   Any advice?    Plus I expect Georgia must be awfully hot and humid this time of year.

Your son should have a great time.   It is currently in the 90s and very humid.  UGA has a great campus.  It is about 90 minutes from Atlanta in the town of Athens.  Great little college town.   I assume the perfect. Game tournament will be based around East Cobb and the new Lake Pointe facility.   If so, one hotel while in Athens and another near East Cobb.   Not sure what you will want to do outside baseball :-)

Several years ago when they were cleaning up this site, they removed some valuable old posts of what to do and where to eat in the area while attending PG WWBA events.  Maybe PG Staff will offer again his favorite places to eat!

Over the last three years, we have stayed in a lake house (did not fish!), team hotel, and a hotel suite with just the family.  Ate at The Varsity (several locations), Marietta Diner, some great BBQ, and at least one Chick-fil-a.

Toured Oakland Cemetery (free), the Governor's Mansion (free), Andretti Carting, saw the big KFC Chicken, walked around Marietta, saw the Atlanta Braves play on the 4th of July and the Aquarium (look for evening discounts online). There is also a $1 movie theater in Marietta that the team went to one night. (On a family vacation we also toured The World of Coke, CNN Center, Olympic Park, Stone Mountain, and Six Flags.)

You may have some time between games and laundry.  Most of the time the players would like to relax or hit the pool.  But try to go out and see what the Atlanta area has to offer.

My son's team will be there for the 17U WWBA  (unfortunately I can't make it).  Had a great time when he was 14.  Stayed at a house on Lake Allatoona that is about 3 miles from LakePoint.  Tried to book it for the team this year, but was too late. Had a great time...gonna be tough sitting at work that week knowing everyone is down there having a great time

We were originally just gong to send the kid off on his own with the team -- as about half the players seem to be doing.  Weren't sure whether to do the same, at first.  But in the end we decided we'd rather share the experience with him.  He actually  seems pleased that we did decide to come along.
