Offensive team asking for help on checkswing

Saw an interesting play today. Batter check swings on a 2 strike count and the ball goes out of play. Defensive team does not ask for PU to get help but the offensive coach does. It was ruled no swing. Am I correct in assuming that if it were ruled a swing the batter would get first since the defense was unable to finish the putout?

Yes, the batter would be awarded 1st (because the rule says so, not because the defense was unable to finish the putout).
