I know the timing for this question is early, but one coach mentioned to us that they are already starting to set up official visits. I'm assuming via email or maybe they started in March with the one phone call thing...
I'm assuming most recruits get offered official visits - the guys getting 5% offers and the guys getting 50% offers. I wouldn't want to waste a visit on a school were my son was going to be a minor contributor(and so a very small scholarship) So do you go into this thing blind, or do you ask before you go?

Each school can pay for 25 official visits. Your son may take no more that 5. The official visits cannot begin until they begin school in the Fall. Long way to go!

It will all sort itself out...so don't worry too much about it now. If they're already offering one, they are likely very serious. You will have many conversations with coaches between now and August/September. You will have a very good idea about who is serious by then. It will likely change a fair amount between now and then too.
grandslam and others

Keep in mind that the boy is permitted a TOTAL of 5 official visits and that covers all sports so if your boy is a multiple sport player make sure you are aware of this.

Also if you are hearing that coaches are setting up official visits now for the fall I would take that with grain of salt--at this point in time some may be doing it based on a players call to them but other than the one March call they cannot call until July 1st. And not having seen all the players as yet, I would think they would be hesitant to begin filling the 25 visit dance card.

One other aspect regarding visits, unofficial or official-- go when classes are in session so the boy can see the campus when it is "alive" and possibly get the chance to sit in on a class or two--the coach can set this up for you ahead of time.

Hoppe that this helps you
