I am a 2015 LHP looking for advice on velocity increase. This past summer I cruised at 80-81 and topped at 84 once or twice. I have read and heard that pitchers can gain 3-4 MPH in the offseason/every year with the right work ethic. This offseason I will be on a strict core and legs workout routine along with distance running. I have set the bar very high with myself and have a goal to top at around 86 or 87 next summer- even if it is just once.

My questions are, with the offseason velo increase, does it affect cruising speed or topping speed more? (obviously it will affect both, but I'm just looking for what my focus should be on as of this offseason)
Is this a realistic or unrealistic goal?
And saying a pitcher has a great work ethic, which year in HS tends to see the biggest increase in velocity?

The distance running is pointless, work on sprints and hills.
Which year tends to see the greatest velo increase is unanswerable. Most of it has to do with maturation...when do you get your mans body? At some point there will be a great jump in that physical maturation and it is usually then, that the greatest velo increases are seen.

Cruising velo and top velo are inseparable. You won't see an increase in one and not the other.
