Amen to that! Infield dirt is smoothed and ready, new duggout ready, warning tracks freshened with new gravel dust, brand new infield looks great, and NO SNOW, high temp forecast of 58 degrees.
Glad the weatherman is starting the season 0 for 1.
Have a ball, fathers and moms and sons, it is finally here.
Well, twenty minutes into the first practice yeasterday, it started pouring rain. Did the coach take the kids off the field? Nope. Left them out there for another 3 hours. Better weather today.
Great, 10 inches of snow on its way down, just a couple days after all the field work is finished.....at least son number 2 has MVP 2005 for Playstation 2, so he likely hasn't looked out the window yet.
Two years ago, our first time on a field was our first scrimmage. Looks like another one of those kind of springs...if you call this stuff spring.
Sting I talked with my oldest son at va tech tonight, 10 inches wow, My ballplayer at Sydney told me the only ball playing they will do this week is snowballing, 5 inches, and with the highs only around 40 he does't think the snow will melt in time for their game with VA Wesleyan this sat. Got to be a bummer for you guys. I'm sure you guys had some scrimages set up for this week end.
As the parent of an '05 who is looking at the southeast to play college ball....question???? Do the schools make up these cancelled games....or is the schedule shortened?
During the early part of the season, when most of the bad weather occurs, college teams are playing their non-conference schedule. Missed non-conference games are rescheduled frequently, but only until they get into conference play. Once conference play begins, they need the pitching rotation to be ready and therefore missed non-conference games might be dropped. I think the D1 schools can play 56 games per season under NCAA guidelines, therefore most teams like to play as many non-conference opponents as they can get in early. Lots of times the coaches are trying to get some innings to figure out "what they got".
Often teams "over schedule" anticipating cancellations. So that they may schedule 58 or 60 games, realizing - by mutual agreement that some late season mid week games that are non-conference may never be played.
The reason this is done is that many games rained out in the early part of the season are in tournaments or otherwise against teams that they can't resched with because of geography/money constraints so they schedule in state non conference foes who are local for a mid week game that they can either get to by bus and back the same day or cancel if necessary.
