One of my players asked me this week to contact the college he will be applying for and talk to the Head Coach. Is this appropriate? I am in my second year as Head Coach at the high school and do not want to step on any toes. The player has the ability to play at the college level, but with our team being sub par he hasn't gotten any looks. He was top 5 in Player of the Year voting for our class in WPIAL this season as a Junior. Thanks for any input.

You have the ability to initiate contact and receive contact from college coaches without restrictions that the college coaches have such as when first contact can be made and amount of contacts per week/month.

One challenge you may have is coaches rely on the quality of the information you can provide, being you are a relatively new coach, you may not have much creditability.

I've been thinking about this, and couldn't a coach's praise of a player mean a lot, especially if the recruiter doesn't see the player on a regular basis like in practice?

Anyone can contact a college coach outside of the players immediate family.

It is not only common, but appropriate for lines of communication from player to college go through the players current coaches.
