No, if asked properly there is no harm at all. I have batters ask is that the top or bottom. I also have hitter ask if a ball they swung at was a strike or did they chase a ball. I have no problem with that. Asking what I thought I was calling might not be a good idea.
To me the issue is not is it ok to ask, which I believe it is....but should be How can I ask?.......results might be the same, but the intent/method is everyhting...
For Batters:
Like MST, I have had many a batter ask me if a pitch they swung at was a ball or strike....There is no special form for that question....Blue, was that a strike?.....
On a called strike the ice is a bit thinner....A question like "outside corner?"....is no problem....and it slides past me easy....
For Catchers:
If we have made an effort to establish a good working relationship, there is not much you cant ask me....but clearly if its sensitive, there is no reason to turn and ask me.....just ask and I will hear it.....normally I will be commenting along the way...."a bit more in" "bring him in".....bring him Up....."give me a nice view".....to assist the catchers...
