3Strikes, I have a son and daughter who received their undergraduate degrees and my wife who received her graduate degree from ODU, and all are doing very well for themselves. ODU is more known locally and regionally, DC, VA & NC. I would say if you choose ODU you would be making an excellent choice
As for the baseball program it was on the slide the last few years but with second year head coach Meyers (who was the pitching coach at South Carolina) the program should be on the rise and back to it's days of being one of the front runners in the CAA.
As the father of a freshman pitcher at ODU, you could probably guess the motivation for our kid going there. Coach Myers and Coach Morris more than impressed us on the visit and since school started with their committment to the kids and to getting that program back where it should be...at the top of the CAA and nationally known. They are very strong recruiters (especially Morris) and will continue to get "players". So far, the son has nothing but good things to say about baseball and the school.
The school is on the upswing. The new basketball arena is simply beautiful and I am sure is a recruiting tool. I have heard that Coach Meyers wants to add more seats to the baseball field. Why do that when a good night hosts 200 people? The Maglev train will never be done, I am sure you have seen that in the Pilot many times. The surrounding area around the school is either rather elite or pretty crummy. The poverty stricken areas are starting to be bought by the school. With plans to add a lot more housing for the students in the works. As for your education, it is a great school with lots of graduates staying local and finding work. If you have anymore specific questions then feel free to ask them.
3strikes,

The best way to get the info you need would be to see the college rankings that US News and World Report does each year. Try Boyd's World to get RPI rankings for schools.
The CAA has many different types of schools with different campus environments and academic levels. The baseball programs vary in level too.
Find the one that works for you.
Depending on the major will depend on the demands for your student. Obviously, some majors will be much more challenging. As far as Coach Myers goes, he is probably one of the most professional coaches out there. I just heard him speak on Monday and he is very impressive. His assistant Nate Guillot also spoke and did a great job. The school itself has some money going into baseball for some indoor batting cages and other upgrades. Coach Myers has some plans for the facility as well as a goal to be in the top 25. Myers has a great resume and will do a fantastic job as a head coach. He knows how to win and knows his stuff when it comes to pitching. Give the program a few years to get up and running with a totally new coaching staff. They have committed Macaloose (PA) and a player from Menchville and others from out of the area.
3stikes, the best thing you could do is e-mail coach and come down to visit the school.
The facility is older but still pretty impressive and the field was in fantastic shape last week. Cherry is accurate in that attendence is low, but I do not believe there are any plans to expand seating. Though there are games when attendance is very good and Coach Myers also has begun plans to improve the attendance at games. I will stress that you find out for yourself what is all about with research and a visit.
The banquet this year to support baseball scholarships is featuring J Bench. It should be a good one. You can get info on the ODU website.

Glad to hear that they are working on improving the area, it can only improve image of school, I must have missed the elite area when I've been there for tournaments.

UPDATE- UPDATE

The campus environment at ODU has changed drastically. The ODU of 10 years ago is not the ODU of today.

I have not been on the campus, execpt the baseball field for a long time. I had a meeting today on Campus, and was I impressed.

It no longer a "commuter school" less than 20% commute. They had tripled dorm rooms and are building more. New academic buildings have recently been completed and others are scheduled for remodeling.

The area towards the Naval Base entrance (away from downtown Norfolk) is nicer than on the way to the school from downtown. Many physicians and lawyers live over there. But the area is growing and as well all know, Rome wasn't built in a day...
I believe if you check again you will see the 06 roster has been posted...It doesn't appear they changed the roster heading from 04-05 to 06.
You will see all the 06 freshmen listed on the roster and you will not see 05 players Matt Hudgins (Kellam) & CJ Jacinto (Bayside) listed at all because they transferred to Va Wesleyan. Even tho Billy Muller (First Colonial) did not play for ODU his Fr year he also transfered to Wesleyan along with former VCU pitcher Wayne Renfrow (Kellam)
