I know so many of you have been down this road, and most of you probably know by now that my job has us in Korea and that my son will graduate from Seoul American HS; not the greatest situation, but we'll work with what we have.
The challenge for us is going to be exposure. No one who matters will ever see him play HS ball over here. It's all going to boil down to summertime events (when we get back to the States for 2 months) and it's going to have to run like a well-oiled machine for us to pull it off.
I'd like input and advice, if any may be offered, on my ideas for how I'd try to set up a summer.
Step 1) Try to hook him up with a summer team. Doesn't need to be a high-rolling travel team because I probably couldn't afford it anyway. Would be nice to find a decent team that plays locally, perhaps regionally. This could be anywhere - we are unencumbered by home ownership and would be free to set up housekeeping for the summer anywhere.
Step 2) Try to arrange visits to meet people like TR and Al McCormack - would talk to you guys well in advance to see if there's any reason to get together, even just to say hi.
Step 3) Do at least two showcase events. PG for sure (one of the larger midsummer events; we're doing South Under this summer) - could they try and place him on a team for the WWBA's?? Talk to Mr Ford and see what possibilities might exist. The Top96 also looks good, if son could make the grade??
Step 4) 1-2 summer 'prospect' camps at schools he's really interested in, or that have a group of coaches/assistants from nearby schools in attendance.
That's where I'm at right now. Am I missing anything? Am I an idiot? Am I wearing really thick rose-colored glasses (though there's no such thing, I really think I'm a very objective baseball dad ) Have I offended anyone? Will anyone have us over for a barbecue?
Okay, peeps, fire away!!
