I have been a loyal follower and sometime poster on this site for six or seven years now. I have laughed and cried along with many of you as you related the stories of your sons and teammates. Tonight is my turn to finally put some feelings into words.

I am the mother of a DIII college pitcher. It has been hard to sit back and watch him fight for respect when playing with the big boys during the summer. His injuries are no less painful, his losses are no less tragic, but he has fought the good fight and earned a starting spot on a quality summer team in a quality league. Tonight is probably his last summer game because his team is on the verge of elimination from the playoffs. This is my wish for him:

One more inning with the ball in your hand and the game on the line. One more time to toe the rubber, shake off the sign, and deliver the strike that ends the inning. One more chance to hear the crowd cheer, and your teammates slap your back as you leave the field. One more time to be part of the team, and revel in the thrill and satisfaction of the game with your brothers.

For those of you with sons who are beginning their college career, enjoy every second of it. Try to get to as many games/practices/scrimmages as you can. It truly goes by before you know it.

You are not only a true baseball mom, you are a gifted poet. Wow.

I hope your son has many, many more one more innings -- whether in baseball or in life. He's a lucky young man.

Love your post. Our son is a rising Jr. in HS and we enjoy every minute. You're a dedicated and true baseball mom.
