While I hate to admit that I was the victim of a scam, I want to post this for any other baseball businesses with a presence on the internet, because the guy who scammed us seems to focus on sports businesses.  Also, we just learned that he has apparently been doing this since 2005!!

As best we can tell, his "real" name is David Perotti, although he has also used the name Sean Palmer, and then when talking with me, used the name Kevin Tyne.  Here are two links to information about him.  I know it's the same guy because the voice that you'll hear if you listen to the 14-minute video in the second link below is definitely the same guy that I spoke with because I talked with him 3 or 4 times.  (In the video, he also acknowledges the 2005 case that is described in the newspaper article.)

The scheme that he describes in the video (which is from 2011) is almost exactly the same "pitch" that he laid out for me, and sounds very similar to the cons that are described in the article from 2005.

PM me if you're interested in more detailed information or if you have similar stories to share.  Anybody who might have recent info to share about similar situations will be greatly appreciated because we know the office of a county sheriff in Colorado is currently looking into this.

Nope. The one I run into goes like this, "Dear Sir, a friend said you are the best so I want to hire you for a job. I'll send you  my CC number for full payment of $XXXX today.  Due to (insert a bunch of convoluted bull crap here) I must  add an extra $3K to the total due.  Please send that back to me as a check.

If anybody falls for this BS, the CC payment goes through, but of course the card number is stolen, and it takes a few days for the  transaction to be voided -- right after the check has cleared.

After reading through and listening to the video, the part that bothers me most....

William Cole, Perotti's attorney, said he hasn't found any indication that his client committed any wrongdoing.

"I haven't seen any evidence of misrepresentation," he said.

This is a defense attorney's job. The law says even alleged criminals get legal support. If you were innocent and charged with a crime you would want legal support.

Of course, RJM, but did you read the article and watch the video?  This guy is not innocent and there is no way the attorney doesn't know it.  It took me less than five minutes to find "any indication..(he) committed any wrongdoing" and I wasn't looking very hard.  The attorneys I know would not handle things that way.
