Basebali,

It is not unusual for NCAA sanctioned summer teams to have a try-out or "showcase". The Cape Cod League holds one every year.

Many summer teams find themselves looking to fill roster spots created by :

1. The draft
2. Player injuries
3. Players who simply decide against playing afterall.

It would be unlikely that a team or league will pay your expenses to attend the tryout. My guess would be that they anticipate loosing some players to any of the reasons listed and need/want to establish a list of prospects that they can use to fill those anticipated vacancies.

I would suggest you call the coach and determine:

1. Is this try-out strictly for that team or is it something that other NCAA summer coaches will be attending. The more coaches the better your chances.

2. If the try-out is only for his team then I would try to determine:

A. How he came about calling you
B. How many "signed" players are expected to be lost in the draft
c. What he actually knows about you and your playing ability.

Last summer I persoanlly spoke with at leat 15 teams that were looking for players one week before the season started. Those teams represented just about every NCAA sanction league and several non NCAA teams.

If the team in question is too far for you get on the phone and e-mail to teams you have are interested in, you may just get the response your looking for.

Sportsboss makes great points...but you did not mention a "try out". You said "workout and practice with the team." That sounds more like hang around for awhile in case we need you.

If it's just a "tryout" Sports boss is right on!

If it's a case of being a "reserve player," which is what it sounded like to me, be sure how long you have to hang around.
