I don't know if you Illinois posters are in touch with your feminine side and regularly tune in to OPRAH bgrroll, but:

Last week the show was about special people and a man from your area, who was a huge White Sox fan, was honored. Seems he has been waiting for all these years for the magic that came your way this fall. Had actually only been a season ticket holder for 5 years but did have 2 World Series tickets this October.

Prior to attending the first WS game, this man was struggling with feelings of helplessness about the Katrina situation. He finally decided that he couldn't attend the games, sold the tickets and with the money he bought supplies, filled up a van and drove down there.

This was reported on some news station and Mark Buehrle and his wife saw the story. The White Sox decided this man should be recognized so they called OPRAH.

On her show the man was suprised by Buehrle and Posednik. They presented him with:

1. An official jersey with his name and '05 on the back.

2. Thew invited him to come throw out the first pitch on opening day.

3. They are flying him and a guest in for Spring Training and a little BP.

4. They are flying him and a guest to the All Star festivities.

5. They are paying for his season tickets for the year.

It was just an amazing thing to watch. Goosebumps and tears. Reinforces the idea that you make your life by what you give.

BRAVO White Sox!

Chill:

Not an Oprah viewer, but thanks so much for notifying us about this man and just as importantly, about Mark Buehrle and his wife. This speaks volumes about them and their character. Buehrle now has a new fan!

I am also very impressed with Scott Podsednik and the White Sox. Definitely a stand up thing to do. Kudos and/or Bravos to them! party

Thank you so much for sharing that with us.

Hmmm......What goes around, comes around....! Smile

Real nice story.
The Ozzie thing was possibly the most ridiculous "non-story" story I've ever seen. He made lots of appearances since the WS and wanted to spend time with the family the week before spring training.
Chicago media types jump all over this while they ignore a national story about a Chicago anchor having an affair with a married mayor while he was taking bribes.
W understood completely as a former owner who understands rigors of season/travel and as a president who has taken more vacations than any in U.S. history.
The question that people should be asking about Ozzie not going to the White House is whether or not any of the players or management cared he wasn't there? Which I'm sure after last season and the hard work he has put in, nobody minded on bit that this guy wanted to spend some time with his family before the season started. I don't think Ozzie heard the team was going to visit the White House and then decided to go on vacaction. That might be something for the management to deal with.

Denis, I'm out of the area at school, but might be coming back to teach high school social studies somewhere next fall. What mayor and anchor was this? Could be a useful example to show how the media controls the public opinion and how the gov. can control the media and all that is attatched. Without the extent of the relationship being explained to students, of course. That just brings too many awkward questions and kids knowing more than they need to know.
