They are the premiere fall team in this neck of the woods. First started by Jim Gilbert many years ago, and now Dean Albany has taken over. Fantastic set of players (many of whom go on to get drafted). They play a great schedule between bringing teams in to play them and going out to good tournaments. They are all about getting the players exposure in front of college and pro scouts. Dean is a scout with the Orioles and has a really good network. Lots of other good fall showcase teams around, but these guys were the pioneers around here.
For fall baseball, you pretty much can't go wrong playing for any of the local showcase teams. Most, from what I know, travel to a couple of tournaments out of town, and play some local tournaments and college teams on the remaining weekends. Oriolanders is the cream of the crop, IMO, but they carry quite a few players from what I recall. To maximize a players exposure, find a fall team that doesn't have 25 players on it.
Playing time is not a concern with the Oriolelanders. Each pitcher gets the same amount of innings every weekend and each position player gets at least one game at their primary position (we had three shortstops who just alternated SS-2B-DH).

We mostly played against other scout teams (Mets, Pirates, another Orioles, Braves) and other elite level fall teams. The only times the scouts weren't at the games were the 8 and 9 AM ones, but the mid morning to afternoon games were pretty full.

Don't turn down the opportunity to try out/play for this team, it's an amazing experience.

Sorry Larry, BUT....

I see no need at this time to present a huge history lesson here, (and hats off to Jimmy G), yet another view point says to add about another 30+ years (of 56 yrs) of rich amateur Baltimore baseball history.

Of course the original south Baltimore team name has changed over the years, yet let's remember each and includes:

- Leone's (sponsored by brothers of family restaurant in south Baltimore. Dominic, Tony and Vince Leone)

- Johnnies (sponsored by Johnny Wilbanks)

- Corrigan's (sponsored by ex Leone's pitcher Bill Corrigan)

- Youse's Orioles (may Walter rest in peace)

- Maryland Orioles (supported by the big league team)

And as brought up from time to time, at the ball park, and probably in a rain delay, names of many individuals who played, scouted, managed, GM, or passed through with the amateur club and were in and around the big leagues. (Hope I did not forget any..... and should you recall some, please add to list.... maybe it's time to start a complete list?)

Gosh Bear...no need to be sorry, since I am right. I was talking about the Orioleanders fall baseball team. I first knew about them when Gilbert coached the team, and then when Dean took over.

If you want me to talk about the Maryland Orioles, formerly Youse's Orioles, formerly Corrigans, formerly Johnnies, formerly Leones...than I can do that as well. As a player in the 80's in this area, I played for Wagner's and then Reggie Smith's Presstman Cardinals teams in 85 and 86. Mel Montgomery was one of the Johnnie's coaches in '85 and '86. Our Cardinals teams owned Johnnies those two years, winning the Baltimore City championship both years, and beating Johnnies in the best of three series each year. They had great players, we had great players (except me of course).

So...where was I wrong?
