Kinda looked like Martin wasn't expecting a fastball.
If I remember correctly from the replays, it appeared that the ball was a bit high and it glanced off of Martin's mitt before hitting the umpire in the neck/jaw area. He went down in an instant but even at normal speed, it looked like slow motion as he fell backward.
Penney and Martin both stood by while the man was being attended to ... it was obvious that both were deeply concerned, and Martin was very very somber.

Good news is it sounds like Kerwin Danley will be OK after all, but he's probably not gonna be chewin steak for a long time. Martin was obviously expecting something else and didn't react until too late- he never touched the 97 MPH heater.
