A top 25 coach told me this story the other day, he had to get rid of 8 players on his college team because they signed 20 players to letter of intents, expecting 3 of their signings to turn pro, and they did not sign. The college was way over the NCAA scholarship limit.

And get this that college coach is trying to sign more recruits for next year.

Anybody want to list the school's that over recruit on a regular basis? I'm a westerner so I'll start with ASU. They knowingly over recruit for three reasons. Murphy wants to keep his job, he needs to win and he doesn't always know what the draft and transfer will do to his roster.

There are programs that don't over recruit, but they are usually not in the top 40. Adams at UCLA was a good example. A coach that didn't over recruit, didn't win as often as UCLA fans wanted and placed more players in the pros that just about anyone.

Which coach do you want if you are a father? Which coach do you want if you are a fan?
Many top 20+ programs overrecruit. They then use the fall as tryout time for the new recruits and returning subs. Often this results in players transferring to "smaller" programs at the suggestion of the coach.

For those who stay the scholarship remains as promised thru that year but is not renewed if the player stays the next year.

Just look at the size of the recruiting class (especially at state schools where the state has scholarship programs for in-state students) and you can get a good idea of who over recruits.
