We have heard the comment now several times that DIII coaches often over-recruit because "they don't know who's really going to show up in the fall since there's no NLI."

It seems that once a player has announced his commitment, even to a DIII, he would not be recruited by another coach/school. Am I wrong?

Yes, you have a misconception of recruiting at every level of college baseball. DIII can be a verbal commitment only and it operates just like a verbal to DI, DII, NAIA or JC. Many of those players with a verbal get recruited right up to the NLI signing or day they attend the first class, for DIII.
After our son signed his paperwork and made his deposit at Trinity U, he was extensively recruited during the Summer after his senior year by 3 DI's and the local JC coach.
As a DI assistant, his school received a verbal from a player they found and really liked. That player continued to be recruited, switched his verbal twice, finally signed an NLI, got drafted and signed with MLB.
Parent,
Not all DIII schools over recruit. It varies from school to school and sometimes from year to year.

Much of it depends if the school uses baseball, or sports in general to get students to come to the school.

It also may depend on how well the school retains students. If a lot transfer after their Freshman year, recruiting may be a way of keeping student numbers up.

As with any level research the school your son is interested in. Check their rosters and see how many freshmen are listed and how many they lose from year to year.

Any division can over recruit and it is not only d3. In D3 there isn't a roster limit that I am aware of so many end up on the spring roster, that if they were at a D1 school would get cut because of roster limits.
