Runner on first - line drive to SS, caught.
Runner scurries back to first. Ball sails out of play. Runner touches up, and is then awarded how many bases?
Rule?
Does it EVER matter which way the runner is HEADING?, or are overthrow rules simply based on where runners were at time of pitch, time of throw, etc.?
I think I know the proper ruling, but want to be sure.

Coach Solty,

In your scenario the runner is awarded two bases from the base occupied at the time of the throw. Therefor he is awarded third base. The fact that he was headed toward first base doesn't matter.

NFHS Rule 8-3 covers baserunning awards and there is a table on page 53 of the rule book that can be used as a quick reference.

There is one base award under NFHS (Fed) rules that is determined by the direction that the runner is headed. If a thrown ball becomes lodged in an offensive players uniform he is awarded one base beyond his last legally aquired base if he is attempting to advance. If he is retreating when the ball becomes lodged he is awarded the base to which he was retreating.
