My 14 yr old came home complaining of pain in his elbow. Its on the outside, on the upper arm part, kinda where the elbow meets the tricep. Only hurts when he throws. He's played 4 games in 3 days, pitching, catching etc.

any advice?

im 18, sr pitcher and i started this season with tendonitis in my elbow(i think) and i took a week off to get the swelling down becuase it got to the point where i couldnt even straighten my arm all the way and that helped for a little while, but it still bothers me. im a starter and i found that wearing an armband with a little gel-type bulb that puts pressure on the top side of your forearm helps relieve pressure on the elbow and thats what ive been wearing...along with taking anti-inflamatory meds. i still have problems with pain, but on the inside of my elbow.
Throwing with persistant pain is a sure way to end a career.

If it hurts for more than 72 hrs with rest you must go have it examined by a sports doctor or you are playing with fire.

My son learned the hard way as a 15 yr old soph.

He ended up with tommy john surgery and and 14 months of rehab.

Don't be foolish see a doc.

He said it was only hurting when he threw or when he quickly straightened his arm. He said it didn't hurt this morning. But I wouldn't doubt he wants to play and may be withholding a bit.
I called the nurse at his school, and he is excused from practice today. No practice tomorrow, off saturday. We have a game on Sunday. I'll let him warmup (not to pitch or catch) and see how it goes.
Problem is, he's got 4 school games next week, so that would be 5 games in 5 days.

Thanks for the advice!
14 year old...4 games in 3 days...pitch and catching.

PoMo,
It sounds like you need to see a sports medicine doctor and also someone (pitching coach) to examine your son's mechanics. BUT, more importantly you need to realize what you are doing to this young man at the age of 14. Four games in three days is a bit much for wear and tear on his body. Also, pitching and catching don't match at any age. Too many throws, especially from a fatigued body. I don't want this too sound overly critical, but if it saves your son from surgery it is worth it.

WWp05,

I do not wish to alarm you but persistant joint pain on the inside of the throwing elbow is an indication regarding possible ligament damage. If you have any intention of playing after the current season, I strongly recommend immediate examination by a very good ortho doc, preferably specializing in throwing injuries.

running helps are strengh? probably not most arm pain is caused by bad mechanics. just a coincedence. with proper rest an ice between games he will have a strong arm. a sure way to ruin a kids arm is to have him pitch and also be a catcher. a good rule is 75 max pitches for high school players with min 3 days rest between games.
