Let me add a few cents. My son recently graduated from college. He walked on and made the team. worked his butt off. I remember going through LL Babe Ruth High School there were time he got the short end of the stick. I never said a word. I told him life is not fair get used to it. If he had a problem with a coach the coach was the only one he had to discuss it with. complaining to me did not do a bit of good

COachB25, this is perfect! Ideally, it's about supporting these boys dreams and helping them mature into men. It's a wonderful thing when everyone involved in this process ... coaches, teachers, parents, have a common goal in this process, support each other, and respect the boundaries of each other's roles. Trust and respect.
coachmerc,
I haven't mentioned it to the parents. They know their son. I have enought time riding herd on my 4.
So you coaches know I have never spoken to a coach about playing time, or positions with a coach at any level. I don't even mention it when they run the most unorganized what-ever-it-is they call practice, I have ever seen. I only address the issues that are important to me. My son will notplay professional baseball. He wants to play in college and if he finds a place to play good for him. If not well that's life. As long as he turns out to be a good man who takes care of his family my job is done.

Maybe since you seem to know what coaches are jokes give the guy a hand. Tell him what he is doing wrong.

Generally, I agree with you - this case is so severe as to be ludicrous.
That said,
It's rare not to see parents that are unhappy about something. And, I'll be the first to say - coaching is purely subjective, therefore, you have to realize and accept that might mean a coach may make decisions you won't agree with.
I've never complained to this coach, or any other coach, about my sons or daughters. I never will because I coached so long myself. As a coach you do what you think is right and if you really care you seek some outside opinions from people you trust.
The problem with HS, unlike other stages of ball is, unless you can afford to uproot your family or pay 12-15K per year for private school you are stuck with the local school.
I once went to this coach two seasons ago when the season was over and said. May I have a word with you(I had never spoken to the man before). His reply, I don't listen to complaints (shows his attitutde). I told him I wasn't there to complain (son was a freshmen on varsity and started most of the games) he would never here me complain for the reasons I stated above. Even if I didn't agree that was just how it went. I told him I was there to volunteer to help with his summer and fall off-season teams. He simply said - see Joe Blow he does that for me. Incidentally, you'll never see this guy at a summer or fall event watching his kids.
I agree when a parent has a problem with his kid and a coach - it cannot be viewed objectively. When an entire team of parents have a problem because they know everyone's kid is mismanaged then there is a problem. All the parents in unison can't be wrong.
When kids tell the coach, they aren't best for the team at this spot or another that another kid is - then that should be a red flag to the coach.
A coach that cares, IS NOT AFRAID, to address his critics and I for one would not want to coach a team where I was not wanted -- would you? This guy relishes the unhappiness he creates and does it to "show he's in charge."
Irrespective of this I want you to answer this.
Tell me TR when is a coach wrong? Can a coach be wrong TR? When can a parent or group of parents be right? Do you think it's possible for a coach to entirely muck up a program? If so, what should be done?
I told my son as a team leader he and a few other kids should ask to talk to the coach...beacuse the team, THE TEAM, TR is not happy.
His reply!
Dad you don't understand this guy...if we do that we'll all sit.

Will,
If you have been around baseball as much as you say you know exactly what I am talking about. 20 players standing around with one coach hitting fungo, 10 players standing by the outdoor cage watching 1 player hit (no coach around), with another 10 at the indoor cage watching 1 player hit (no coach around). Give me a break. I may come off as a little opinionated and maybe arrogant. But I have to wonder about these "Coaches" who have no credentials except finishing teachers college acting like they were Babe Ruths batting coach. The fact that you could even make a sarcastic comment like the last one and imply I should waste my time trying to discuss "practice" with a lifer teachers union member and that I was even botherer by it shows I must need to get some counseling. Before all you teachers go crazy on me "MY SISTER IS A TEACHER WITH A MASTERS WORKING ON HER PHD".
For the record, in our school system to replace a coach you MUST have a teachers slot open for the new coach or take a coach from the existing teachers in your school. Talk about a good deal!

The coach is only wrong if he endangers the well being of a player. All other aspects of the game are his domain.
I have never seen a team that there are not unhappy parents. I have been unhappy myself but I would never but in to the coaches affairs.

Coachmerc,
I say let the teachers teach. But a teacher acting like a coach and worrying about their lifetime won/lost record doesn't make sense to me (If you can't win a few games in 25-30 years...well enough on that). My opinion only....HS SPORTS SHOULD BE FUN. In 25 years when you look in the year book it will not say if you were a starter or not. My kids just laughed at my picture they didn't ask if I was a starter. And as far as the practice is concerned in Alabama we get to practice one month before the season starts. A little organization for that one month would go a long way. If you get caught having a ball on the field out of that one month window expect probation and a $250-500 fine.
If you want to play at the next level then you should do everything you can to get to the next level. But thinking your HS team will get you to a college team is a little Polly Anna-ish. HS should be about enjoying the last few years of your life before REAL LIFE actually sets in.

For the record I had a good coach in HS, but even he could not make me a pro. By my senior year I knew I was not a college player. I had a couple of friends who went on to play at small colleges and my next door neighbor was a college all-american in football (small college).
Guess what we all see each other on a regular basis and we all do pretty much the same type of work, and we are all in the same income bracket. The college sports hardly ever come up. I try to bring it up every now and then to let them know I am happy they were able to accomplish what they did, and that is what a friend should do. Plus I tell other people in their presence so they don't have to come off as a show-off.

I was sarcastic yes but just trying to make a point. You seem to paint ALL high school coaches as a "joke" your words. I get the impression that if you did not play in college or professionally you do not know anything. I know guys who played professionally got a high school job and it did not work out. During my tenure I had the fortune to coach against a man who did not even play in high school . he coached 35 plus years His teams were very good. Very respected. It is not what you did it is what you do.
